I follow quite a few streamer tyers on Facebook, and particularly enjoy the posts in the big fly group from many of them.
A surprisingly large number of the really good tyers are from Sweden, and they post pictures and videos of some great flies. One of those guys is Ilias Fn Karanzas who ties some mean pike flies under the name of Apex Flies.
Sometime this autumn, Ilias started posting some 3D renderings of a pretty sexy looking bobbin holder, and with my history of being kinda obsessed with bobbin holders, I followed the posts closely and soon contacted Ilias to get some details.
Ilias' idea was to produce a bobbin holder designed specially for large fly tyers and to make it from carbon fiber and anodized aluminum. Talk about cool materials!
...a pretty sexy looking bobbin holder...
The bobbin holder was designed with an adjustable ceramic tube, a very precise brake mechanism and a large inner tube diameter, making it particularly good for people tying large flies.
In the following weeks, Ilias posted more pictures – hand sketches as well as computer drawings - and soon a project took form: these things were going into production.
But as people who do physical products know, starting up a production of such a niche product, and in high tech materials to boot, isn't exactly cheap. Because of that, Ilias decided to launch a crowd funding campaign to finance the production. He selected Kickstarter as his platform.
This campaign is now ready to roll, and it needs your support. If you want a super cool tool for your tying and want to show your affection for innovation in fly tying, it's off to Kickstarter to pledge some of your fly tying money to seed this project. Early birds will get a great price, lower than the coming market price, and there's a discount on orders of more than one.

The bobbin holders will be called the Apex Predator Bobbin, and will be available in some great colors: Swedish Blue (purple), Pumpkin Spice (burnt orange), Stealth (gray) and Esox (olive/lime green).
