Green Highlander

Here we will be tying the world famous Scottish salmon fly Green Highlander. Since I don't fish much of salmon myself due to high prices on license here in Iceland I have to admit that I've never caught fish on the Green Highlander. This video is tied by a request and if you watch the video you'll get to know more about that request and why I decided to agree on tying this fly in a video. The fly itself is originally from the Spe in Scotland but the Spey area is famous for salmon fishing in the river Spey and then for holding the distilleries that produce the worlds finest single malt whisky. It's not known when exactly Green Highlander was made but it's been around probably for over 200 years at least. Major Glen Grant Whorwood is said to be the designer of the fly and his family had a castle on the banks of Spey according to the book "The Salmon Fly, 1895". There are over 100 variations of the fly out there and nowadays it's more common to tie it with a grey or brown hair wing from squirrel or even fox. That's of course up to you how you tie it. Happy tying and have fun making the Green Highlander.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
