Most fly line spools can be taken apart, after which you can easily remove the thread or twists that might hold the line. But don't be tempted to remove the line from the spool. Leave it on the spool while you wind the line on the reel.
Notice the small sticker indicating the reel end of the line. On a weight forward line you will definitely want that end to attach to the backing.
