Bobbin threading

You know the situation: your thread just broke or you are preparing a new color thread, and need to get that ridiculously thin 8/0 thread through that unrealistically small hole in the bobbinholder. Not possible! The thread is frayed, the hole is stuffed with wax and your hands are trembling as you see the fly slowly unravel in front of you.
You need help!

The help is a bobbin threader or a small trick. Let us take the trick first.
Cut the thread clean with your scissors and put it as far into the tube as you can. Grab the end of the tube with you lips and suck! Not a slow, soft suck, but a deliberate slurp with full force. Put your tongue in front of the hole, create a vacuum in you mouth and let go. The thread is likely to be pulled through. If it does not work the first or second time, it is probably not going to work. Go to the next step.

Using a tool can help. A bobbin threader is a piece or wire bent in a special shape. It is pointy, but allows for the thread to pass between the wires. Put it through the bobbinholder tube from the top, put the thread between the wires and pull. Voilá! You are ready to save that fly.
You can make your own tool from a piece of medium stiff monofilament - 2X or 3X is fine. Bend it and squeeze the bend to a point with your teeth or a small set of pliers. This works just as well as the store bought tool, and can be made on the fly from the ribbing monofilament, that you might already have in your fly tying stuff.
