Inexpensive adjustable hair stacker

Hair stackers are usually made from metal - aluminum or brass - and bought in a fly shop.

A good alternative to these ready made stackers are inexpensive syringes. Buy a few in varying sizes. In some cases you even get a needle with a protective cover in the package. This yields a free varnishing needle and a fine tube fly tube.
Remove the piston and cut off the tip of the syringe. Remove any roughness on the edge with fine sand paper and reinsert the piston.

You can now stack hair by adjusting the depth of the newly made stacker, inserting it tip first into the open end, tapping the handle a few times on the table and pushing the piston up again. The stacked hair is ready.
Not only is in inexpensive, but it is also quiet compared to its metal counterparts. And it is transparent making it easy for you to follow the process and see when the hair is perfectly stacked.
You might experience problems with static electricity with certain materials - deer hair in particular - but for many other materials the adjustable stacker is a great tool.
