Salvage a cracked fly line

If you full Weight Forward (WF) fly line has started cracking in the transition between the head an the running part, consider converting it to a shooting head.

Cut the line in front of the cracked part (when seen from the reel) and splice an eye on the braided core in the back end of the line. Attach this to a shooting line, and you have a shooting head which will probably work well with a rod, which is a class or two lighter than the original line weight.

If your shooting head is too heavy or too long, trim off part of the front taper and carefully trim the line in the thick back end until it reaches a length as weight, which suits the rod.

Shooting heads are great for distance casting and carrying larger flies on lighter rods.

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
See more details about what you can do to help in this blog post.

The Global FlyFisher has recently been updated to a new publishing system, and there may be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.
