During the 10 year existence of GFF we have outgrown several hard drives, several servers and several hosting services. GFF is a big child now, eating up about 4-5 gigabytes of hardisk space and serving some 100 gigabytes of data a month.
Since we acquired our own server, we have had no disk space blues. We now have two times 160 gigabytes to host the sites that run on this server. Nothing we expect to outgrow right away.
But traffic has grown immensely, and the way we have our server parked with a service provider means that the traffic costs money. And quite a lot actually. I pay some 4-500 US dollars every month to keep the server afloat, and most of that is for the bits and bytes we - and you - move.
So we are planning on moving the site again: this time to a service provider who will not charge us for the traffic.
I have started looking for a host, and preparing for such a move. It's not a critical job, but it's definitely not trivial either. Moving a 4 Gig site with a 150 Meg database is somthing that recquires a bit of planning. So I am currently cleaning out the version of GFF running right now and scouting for a new host with "unlimited everything" - disk space and traffic. We also need some more advanced features than the usual web site such as image manipulation, shell access and a slew of other things. We'll see who can deliver that.
Until then we'll just keep on trucking.
