Alan's Biography

Alan started tying flies shortly after his 8th birthday, in fact the day after his Dad came home with his first pair of bifocals. Alan's Dad set-up his tying vise after dinner that night, and taught Alan to tye. His first flies were brown hackle peacock wet flies and black/grizzly woolyworms. The first woolyworm that he tyed is still in his fly fishing gear. Alan quickly became the fly tyer for his Dad, Dad's friends, and his buddies, and has been tying now for over 43 years. His father's fly pattern preferences leaned toward the classic Michigan and Eastern patterns including the traditional Rangeley patterns that his Dad called 'Eastern Streamers'. He started professionally tying at 12 years old, and continues to this day. Fly patterns that he tyes run the gamut from North Country soft hackles, Western patterns, steelhead flies, bassbugs, Catskill and Eastern dry flies to the Rangeley style streamers. He has developed a series of steelhead spey style flies, Western Canadian Bucktails, and his own Rangeley style streamers for the Alberta Rocky Mountain Lakes. Currently Alan resides in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan with his wonderful wife, family, and his Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
