Notes: Loretta is a new comer to tying streamers and had seen the project announced on the Fly tyer magazine forums. She had never tied feather wing streamers before, so she began researching various patterns and decided on the Cains River series. It just so happens that she lives just 1.5 hrs from the Cains River frequents some of the named pools such as the Buttermilk Pool. Loretta came up with the concept for the pattern while tying other streamers in the Cains river series for the project. During the long cold Winter months in New Brunswick she often gets to dreaming about the next fly fishing season hence the name Winter's Dream for this fly. It is a beautiful dark fly mixing blue and black which will surely land a majestic Atlantic salmon from the Buttermilk Pool in the near future.

The Cains River style of streamers was popularized by Fred N. Peet and C. Jim Pray and have become known to be effective lures for sportfish such as Atlantic salmon, steelhead, Pacific salmon and pike as well as a range of saltwater targets. Some general notes when tying this style are outlined in Joseph D. Bates book, Streamer Fly tying and Fishing.

On all Cains River streamers all wing hackles are of the same length. When a two-color- collar is called for, the rear color should be twice as heavily dressed as the forward color. Two or three turns of tinsel should be taken around the bend of the hook below where the tail is tied in. The heads are mostly varnished black. Mr. Pray used regular number two sproat hooks, although the flies may be dressed on hooks 2X or 3X long. Nearly all the series are similar in design.

Thank you Kelly.

I really enjoyed learning how to tie these flies and the streamer is the first in a series I plan to tie.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
