#309 Webster Lake Surprise - Jim Malo #309 Webster Lake Surprise - Jim Malo

Tied by: Jim Malo

Originated by: Jim Malo

Hook: Gaelic Supreme Mike Martinek Rangeley Streamer hook

Thread: Gray 8/0

Tail: Red golden pheasant body feather fibers

Butt: Made in three parts using the rear quarter of the body. Rear quarter is peacock herl followed by white silk and the last quarter is peacock herl

Body: Black floss

Rib: Gold oval tinsel, fine over the white floss and 2 strands of gold flat tinsel cross wrapped over the black floss

Belly: White bucktail

Wing: Two grizzly hackles

Shoulder: Yellow golden pheasant body feather

Head: Gray

Notes: Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg is at the very least a mouthful, a Nipmuc word meaning "Fishing Place at the Boundaries - Neutral Meeting Grounds". Luckily for the linguistically impaired, Webster Lake works just as well. The lake has the dubious distinction of being the longest place name in the United States and one of the longest in the world. The Massachusetts lake has a population of warm water species including sunfish, bass, pike and trout that anglers may test their mettle with. Jim invites influence from Hebert Welch's Kennebago Streamer and Cupsuptic as seen in the peacock herl and floss butt section. The fly has been used to chase both salmon and trout throughout Northern Maine, Massachusetts and parts of Canada.

If you want to have someone else pronounce the name, check out this video from the CBS News. https://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=5018348n

Many years ago, a friend told me the Nipmuc name means "We fish on our side, you fish on your side, and no one fishes in the middle where the fishing is best." Thanks for the link to the video.

Nice fly.

I've never fished there, but I've driven that stretch of 395 a ton of times. :P I think the signs there shortened it to Lake Chaubunagungamaug. It's been a few years though ...

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
