Source: Streamer Fly Tying and Fishing, Bates pg. 293
Hook: Unknown 6xl #6-#12
Thread: White 8/0
Tail: Orange wool short and heavy
Body: Rear half is gold flat tinsel and front half is orange wool
Rib: Gold flat tinsel over wool body
Throat: 2 turns of black hackle gathered down long and sparse
Wing: Gray squirrel tail
Eye: White painted eye with black center
Head: Black
Notes: This pattern features a two-toned body in Orange and gold. The fly originated in 1925 from a suggestion by Mr. William Kelly from the Cranberry Lake region of the Adirondack Mountains in New York State. Mr Kelly was a believer that the orange and gold combination body with a gray wing was the ideal fly for all trout species. The fly has been shown to be quite productive on brook trout in the east and rainbow trout in the west. No doubt other trout species will find a similar interest. Bob made a couple slight changes from the dressing from Mr. Howard by using a black head with a painted eye rather than the original red head with a jungle cock nail eye.
