Dave Lomasney Streamers

We missed having Dave's flies as a part of the collection in 2013, but we are lucky to be able to include a series of streamers from his personal collection here. The streamers included represent a few of the classics, some conversions from other styles of flies and even some original creations.

Carrie Stevens is a constant in the streamer tyer's life and so it is no surprise to see her streamers make an appearance in the collection. The Green Beauty is no stranger to the blog and we have seen several variations of the famous streamer over the past couple years. The Rapid River is another of Carrie Stevens' pattern. It is not often seen and is named after the short river which flows between Umbagog Lake and Welokennebacook Lake, where the middle dam is located.

Dave also gives a nod to one the authors of the Carrie Stevens history. The Blueback Streamer is a creation by Leslie K. Hilyard and pays homage to the blueback trout, a species that played an important role in helping sustain the first settlers in the area. The blueback trout are small and were not considered a game species, but are considered a prey species for the landlocked salmon and brook trout.

Several conversions are also included in the collection. The Blue Jay, a trout fly, and the Plymouth Rock, a lake fly, both originated from Mary Orvis Maybury's "Favorite Flies and their Histories". Dave's Black Dog conversion is derived from the classic Black Dog salmon fly, a pattern that has been around for centuries.

The classic Alaxandra is a standard in the wet fly angler's flybox. Dave's version of the fly are tied using peacock sword rather than the more traditional herls. The swords lend themselves nicely to being tied in a Matuka style which Dave has done on both of his versions. The streamer version of the fly was originated by Mr. Frier Gulline around 1929, based on the English wet fly. It was found to be an excellent lure for both trout and bass in Canadian waters.

Mike Martinek's Grey Eye is also presented. The pattern features jungle cock incorporated into the wing, something not seen often, but found in a couple of the classics such as Shang's Special, a Carrie Stevens pattern.

Among the remaining patterns is the Parson Tom, a classic and somewhat standard in the eastern streamer box. The origins of the streamer are foggy, but perhaps it is as simple as it being named for a Parson named Tom. The Black Witch is a pattern derived from Austin Hogan and was recently brought to light with the efforts of Lance Allaire, Don Bastian and Mike Martinek. The whole story can be read on Don's blog.

Finally we have a streamer that was bound upon Dave's vise. The Blue Wing Teal, as the name implies, is a blue winged streamer match with the strong barring of the teal flank. This is contrasted by a bright pink body and wrapped with a glint of pearl flat braid. It is a beautiful streamer, and we hope to see more originals from Dave in the future.
