Redfish Puff

Lead dumbbell eyes, a bit of flash, marabou and some deer hair and and you have a deadly fly for fish prowling the flats for shrimp and crabs. It's the Redfish Puff, and it catches more than redfish.

The Redfish Puff is a great fly, one of my personal favorites. It works on a variety of inshore species ranging from redfish to flounder. The marabou gives the fly a very distinct action in the water that makes it harder for fish to resist. It's effective in both hot or warm conditions and chilly to cold water. It is absolutely deadly on a tailing red, and is very easy to cast at your target. I tend to tie the redfish puff in a variety of sizes and colors depending on water depth and conditions, but chartreuse has been hands down the most productive color.

Tying sequence

First tie the lead eyes onto the underside of the hook shank just behind the hook eye with hook point up, secure with a dab of super glue.

Next tie a small clump about one inch in length of your midge flash to the opposite end of the hook so that it sticks straight out.

Easy

Tie your marabou directly behind the flash giving about 4 wraps or so of your marabou once your done wrapping secure it to the shank.

Next wrap your thread slowly towards the back of the hook so that your thread begins to wrap over the marabou and give it a rear facing direction.

Clip another small clump of flash this time slightly longer than inch or so and loosely tie it to the underside of the marabou. Pinch the tips of the midge flash and gently pull them into different directions so that it flares out.

Secure your wraps with a small dab of super glue, spread the dab with a pin evenly.
Once the glue dries, cut a moderately thick patch of deer belly hair and clip both ends so that they are even.

Now wrap your deer hair and spin it into a perfect even puff of hair and trim it down to your desired size.

Whip finish and a dab of glue to secure the tag end of the thread should do it.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
