PET Blue NJ

Black and blue colors are great no matter where you are fishing for salmon or sea trout. The PET Blue is just one of several colors of Nils Jorgensen's PETs. They are great in all sizes and easy to tie on the new Pro Tube System.

Black and blue colors are great no matter where you are fishing for salmon or sea trout in rivers. The PET BLUE is just one of several colors of my PET's. They are great in all sizes but my favorite is the one tied on the Pro Micro Tube from Pro Flytyer.

The fly is perfectly balanced with a small Pro Disc or Pro Cone in front, then the hook as weight on the back of the fly. To give the fly some extra life, it has a Pro Soft Disc on the back part close to the hook.
The wing is a key ingredient on the smaller flies. Here it's a rabbit zonker and that just beats other furs by many lengths in my opinion.
It has the perfect shape, fill and movement and
can easily be cut/adjusted to suit the conditions.

The PET BLUE works fine as a traditional down stream fished streamer but upstream fishing with medium to fast stripping is very effective. I think the little red butt provokes the take when it is pulled fast in and out of the fish's sight. But this fly is also good fished slow on a sinking line for sea trout in the deep pools.

Bring the PET to the river, you wont loose!

Jim,

I have no idea whether a salmon turns its eyes down as a reaction to light. I have never heard about that before and never seen it happen, but you might be right.
Regarding the life or death of the fish that Nils is holding, I'm almost 100% sure they are all alive and were returned to live on. Nils is an avid C&R fisherman, and even though he does keep a bright fish to eat now and then, basically all his salmon are released again.

I believe all of the salmon photographed are dead. A live salmon's eyes will be down turned in response to unaccustomed light. Am I right?

Thorsten,

No reason to be sorry...

We realize that Brian Størup is also a skilled fly tier and that he ties on the Pro Tube system, but we haven't been able to find any records of a Pet Blue fly from his hand... Where can we find a description or picture of his fly?

And as we have said many times before: it's really difficult to come up with something truly original these days, and with all due respect for Nils (and Brian), putting some dubbing, a rabbit strip, a hackle and some jungle cock on a tube is not deeply original. Adding a rear cone does make a little difference, but apart from that only the colors sometimes separate patterns. It's very difficult to tie something that doesn't look like something that someone else has tied before.

We will keep on crediting Nils for the fly. He is quite the creative fly tier, and doesn't need to borrow from others.

Thanks. These colors are great all season colors here in Iceland but to change the Pro Hook Holder piece to green makes almost another fly. A Green Butt is also known as a great catcher : )

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
