Keel Hook Sand Lance

Forums:

A relatively simple semi-weedless tye that rides the mid column with an intermediate line and a slow retrieve...tyed on a bass worm hook...
Change some colour and you've got a silverside...

Or you can go XXL......

These swim in the rips of Nantucket Sound when mature sand eels are the soup d'jour...

Those flies should be illegal. They are brutal.

BANNED in Boston......

Thanks...

'Just throwin' out some ideas and sharing the fruits of my frigid New England off season...
I'll get a fuzzy notion, run with it, test it in the fly drowning tank (hot tub), then (in the Spring) put it before a striped preditory focus group for final R&D...

SandLance of note......

This synthetic version convinced more than a few educated Stripes and is one of my Spring go-to flyz...

Great ties. . What hook are...

Great ties. . What hook are you using? At the moment, I am waiting to receive some hooks I ordered, 2 being extra strong worm hooks by Owner and Mustad that have very long throats that one can tie large flies onto without using the shank. Have you tried these too or Eagle Claw 413? Tying up those sand eels like you did must keep the hook sharp after dragging the sand bottom and prevents snagging mussel beds.

A photo is worth 1,000 wordz......

I took the liberty to copy a photo posted by good friend Adrian Sharp on flyfishingforum.
He nailed the intent and the application of the Owner Oversize Hooks #5110-171...
The 7/0 is plenty BIG for this phlatwing...
The 11/0 are a bit too humongous...

I was going to tye up a few and scan them for this post but the hot water pressure relief valve decided to fail and my energy was consumed with a big clean-up...
All part of the joys of home ownership!

Tuffleye......

I like epoxy...
'been using it for a long time...
Tuffleye is an acrylic alternative with an 30 second "blue light" cure...
So far so good with an interesting learning curve...
Tuffleye may not replace epoxy but it has some curiously ingenious applications...

Like Esox said, 'brutal'...

Like Esox said, 'brutal' flies! Very good work, I hope my tying skills can compete with yours one day...... But first i've to start tying my own flies

Pete,...

Pete,

That is one wicked fly! A great concept.

Did you fish it? Any problems with the long wing/body/tail tangling around the hook or does the angle between hook and materials take care of that?

Thanks for the kind words!...

Thanks for the kind words!
Positive re-enforcement appreciated...

The body is a blend of "DNA"...not much material involved...
The 3-D eyes and head are fused with the new Tuffleye Acrylic material (applied then "cured" with a UV light)...sort'a like epoxy but not...Ms Epoxy and I are still "dating"!
The DNA material looks great in the water...nice movement, flash, and colour.
Fouling/tangles not an issue...

The Brewster Flats here on Cape Cod (and Barnstable Harbour and Chatham/Monomoy) sport clouds of paranoid Sand Lances...this was intended to be a stragler on the fringe of "oblivion"...Striped muggers will pick off targets of opportunity...

Special hook...

Pete,

Once you get a chance to fish the fly, let's know how this hook works. I like the concept of the hook shape and the way the fly is tied, but I never tried these hooks while fishing.

Also referring to the fly on the keel hook you posted in the other thread, of course. We rarely see keel hooks used here.

Loved the look of this fly and also the simplicity.....I tied a few up and tested them out on the Hampshire (UK) coast.....It killed the school bass down there, I lost count of how many I caught over the week I was down....It also fishes inverted as intended.
There's a pic below of said fly lodged in a schoolie :D
Cheers Dave
