Jakob,
I might add a few more photos, but I need to know exactly what you are missing. What details do you want to have illustrated better?
Kasper
Hey Martin
I know I know you have a lot all ready :0). I acknowledge the great work you do off course. The only thing i was aiming at was more pictures of the final fly, but I will have to settle with 40 it seems ;0).
Best wishes
Jakob

Bada BING... Bada BOOM...
where doe you get the material shrimp legs tyed on your super shrimp?
Hi Mike,
thanks for the ideas from the southern hemisphere. I will try them. I am fishing with my daughter, so three or four fish should be sufficient for dinner. I am just curious whether it is going to work on flatfish.
You guys must get ready for trout season.

I would try a small wooly worm, probably no bigger than size 10, in the same colour as the local rag or harbour worms. Or a small shrimp pattern with plenty of flash.
All the best
Mike
Martin thank you for giving a general list of thing for the fly. i just recently started fly tying and is kinda new at all the materials and types. made me a shopping list of fly tying materials!
thanks a plenty

Glenn,
The Cardinal implies that we're talking a red pattern. Everything that has to do with cardinals (clergymen, sports teams, birds) is red, and might the fly not be red also?
I dug into my books and looked for the Cardinal, and found a reference for it in Terry Hellekson's impressing Fish Flies. This encyclopedia refers you to the pattern Scarlet Ibis, which is tied like this:
Thread: red
Tail: red hackle fibers
Rib: embossed gold tinsel
Body: red wool
Hackle: red tied as a throat hackle
Wing: red bucktail
Head: red
The fly was originally a classical wet fly tied with Ibis feathers and had a feather wing. If you search the web for "scarlet ibis fly pattern" you will find several references.
Here's a link to the Orange Ibis, which is a lot like the Scarlet Ibis with a feather wing:

Here's a link to the fly named the Cardinal, still with a feather wing:

Hope this helps

If you'd like a more attractive or unique case, there are two things I've done that others may find fun to try. Both options increase the cost slightly. First, you can purchase cordura fabric, factory seconds or closeouts, for ~$6.50 a yard (check ebay for example). Your case will look professional if you do this. This is exactly how the good cases are made. Simply glue the cordura to your pipe, or stitch a tube and slide the pipe in. You can even add webbing for a handle or sling.
Second, and the most fun IMO, is to purchase white pvc, not abs. Using a medium grain sandpaper, sand the length of tube. Get the entire surface sanded. Then, using a rough grain sandpaper (medium will also work) run the sand paper from top to bottom (once or twice only - do not sand back and forth for this step). Force the grit to slice vertical lines down the pipe. Different techniques will give you different effects, you'll have to experiment. Now for the trick - take your favorite color of wood stain, and stain the pipe. Run your clothsponge with the stain from the top of the tube to the bottom. You will notice immediately that your case is taking on an uncanny wood appearance. Some folks can't tell it's pvc even when holding the case. Using a small camp stove and leather gloves, you can kinkbendwarptwist the pipe to increase the wood effect before you sand and stain. Beware of fumes.
I've been making didgeridoo instruments this way for over a decade. Each one is unique, and I've never had anyone guess it was pvc.
Lounes,
For the original pattern I used tinsel to secure the strip. The flies shown above aren't that large, and I have omitted the tinsel, but for a good looking fly I would recommend rib. The zonker strip tends to sag when it gets wet.
Martin
Just have to try this Blackout Kutling!! Looks like a killer for the big seatrout her, deep into a norwegian vestcoast fjord.
One question when tying this: The tyinginstruction mentions silver tinsel. Is this for ribbing the zonkerstrip "matukastyle"?
Hi
I know Snowbee reels - I have Geo Fly reel and for me this is the most advanced reel in the best price you can buy. It is absolutely perfect fly reel. Especially Geo # 3/4 and his 122 grams of weight. Next size (my own) has 128 grams only. For me this is the best LA reels ever.
The famed Grimersta river (In scotland) record was just broken last week, 20th September 2010 (previous record stood since 1900's). Fish of 32lb caught on this fly by a lady angler, and returned.
Jan., yes I remember them as well & as you say it was very dusty - a bit like walking into a talcum powder factory. Again. they didn't take the market by storm but it was a useful source for anyone reconditioning old rods as well as those who wanted something a bit unique & certainly very different.
Ali,
Its a pike and I caught in Sweden.

I recall arranging the first "tour" of Partridge's hook making facility in the UK. Alan was kind to provide his time and staff for the visit even though he was mystified why someone would be interested. The staff were quite surprised that someone would actually want a tour of the plant and were enthusiastic. Subsequent years saw others given a tour as well. He also arranged for some time on 'quality' water in the UK through his connections in the industry. I still have the photos somewhere.
Alan was a true gentleman.

John, not only did Partridge make cane they were also making 'greenheart' blanks when I visited in 1987. The process involved in grinding down the greenheart into tapered components. This sanding/grinding/lathe work was exceptionally dusty! If I can find the brochure I'll make a PDF of it for those interested. Don't hold much hope though, I've been on a housecleaning binge and a lot of paper ephemera has gone.

What kind of fish is that? and where were you fishing at? I want to catch onee!!!!!
… I have a small favor to ask.
Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.
The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
