Nice and different article!

I have my own experiences with some people claiming some catches that are out of this world here in Iceland. I fish a lot here, MUCH more than most other anglers here. I fish many of the best rivers and mostly have very good catches. So I know what is possible for one person to catch in a season. It is Atlantic Salmon Im talking about here.

I have two funny stories. One is about a guy claiming he had caught over 4000 salmon. These person is a guide so I already was wondering when this guide should be catching all these fish when being a guiding all season. But I got the answers myself when I was with this person for two weeks. After this period, he was telling people that he had caught 124 salmon. The fact is the this person was guiding these two weeks and did not catch any salmon, I was there! So either this person wants to make a name by lying or the does not know what is coming out of his mouth.

Another remarkable story is an angler claiming over 16,000 Atlantic salmon. The season is 90 days here in Iceland and this guy has a family, work and is also guiding. Im not judging here but MANY people ask me about this and I don't have the answer. I know that even though I fish and catch a lot, I will never come near this number in my life

Rasmus Hansen calculated on these 16,000 salmon and it could be interesting to hear a comment from him.

My fishing has over the years just developed into enjoying more and more when me and my friends have some action. These people who have a need to stand out a talk about some crazy numbers simply don´t interest me. This is not what fishing is about. But if people ask my about my fishing, I will tell them but try to be a little humble and show interest in others fishing.

Best regards from Iceland

Nils

i fished the crackle back which is similar to the super pupa but not the same.the crackle has caught me alot of trout when nothing else would work on the river.i will be tying the super pupa, because of the close resemblance to the crackle and i know it will catch fish.looks like a killer pattern to me,thanks for the info.

I missed out on a golden opportunity to learn from one of the best fly tiers on the east coast (my grandfather) It wasn't till after he passed that I got interested in both fly fishing & tying. Lucky for me my uncle is pretty darn good himself and was willing to teach me the basics. But once I found your videos it was game on because I no longer had to drive him crazy every time I had a question or wanted to add a new type of fly to my fly box. Your videos are the best and have been very helpful. Thanks a million!

Great Article! I can see why this works for you. Thanks for sharing!

Dear anonymous,

Dumbest comment I have ever come across. You obviously didn't get the point of the article, which is exactly the opposite of what it says: it doesn't matter a bit how you look!

Irony, you know? Joking by saying the opposite of what you really mean. And I even stamped the article with a "This is a joke" stamp so that even you up here in the Northwest could get the idea.

Well, I didn't succeed, did I?

Happy New Year

Martin

PS: I have been to the Northwest (in several countries actually, even though I guess that you refer to the only real Northwest, namely the one in the US), and it's not true that 99% don't give a rats @#$ about looks. A lot of you people fishing in the Northwest do look like sh*t, but my estimate is that the number is more like 47.8 percent. A lot of your fellow local fly fishers actually look quite decent, and do care a bit about looks.

PPS: Next time you criticize something, be a man and stand behind it with your name. That's also good style.

Hello Erik and Sandra,

It was nice to meet you at the Fly supply store. Thanks for the nice words about the article.
For sure we will meet in the future, maybe in your beautifull fly fishing cabin, or on a fly fishing show.

Best regards,

Tom and Fousjia.

Hello Dan,

Sorry for the waiting, I was reading your question today.
You asked me about designing a simple drag system for the future in my reels. I am thinking about it and maybe in a future reel design I will build such a drag system in one of my reels. I am thinking of a little disc brake system.
Thanks for your nice words and I hope to see your reel design photo's soon!!

Best regards,

Tom Biesot.

Nice article!
I tie some big flies myself for peacock and specially for payara. Its incredible how Little info on tying big, large yet light flies is there around the web. It is still a weird thing for people when I show them a 12" fly and I tell them I cast it with an 8 weight rod.

Hi Martin, Jeez, what a shock! I didn't know until I walked through the Danish fly fair article and I see something very unfamiliar. Man it must be more than 20 years we met in a get together somewhere in Ulm (Germany) together with some other weirdo's (incl. Hans) trying to fish in mid winter! After tying at two Danish fly fair in the early 1990's I stopped tying at shows and also lost contact with nearly all friends & tiers. Hold on Martin. All the best wishes my old friend. Jay

It's a nicely tied pattern. My understanding was that the pattern was originated by Charles Waterman during a botched attempt to tie a Silver Doctor. He tied the fly in the Brooks "blonde style" as shown with all the materials above the shank with no beard or belly. In an article authored by Waterman quite long ago (like 20 years or more) in some fishing rag, he noted he chucked the streamer for brown trout in Montana. He used shooting heads as I recall. That is the first recollection I have of a reference to the pattern. My own experience is that it is indeed effective on trout and almost everything else.

Since you got this far …

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
