The Global FlyFisher has recently been updated to a new publishing system, and there may be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.

LeaderCalc Category

Please notice: LeaderCalc hasn't been optimized for small screens. Turning some devices horizontally might make it easier to use, but using a suitably large screen is the best solution.

Classic style leaders for swinging streamer and wet flies in a current or retrieving the fly in stillwater. Suitable for fairly large and heavy flies.

  • Baitfish leader

    5 variations
    • Great for intermediate and sinking lines. Optional: add a split shot about 6 in down the tippet from the ring or swivel. Excellent formula for fishing leech & baitfish flies.
  • Basic Streamer

    9 variations
  • Big Trout and Sea Trout Streamer

    52 variations
    • This particular leader has been specifically modified for seatrout fishing: a 3X tippet behind a 2X tippet. If a 3X is to limp, remove and use the 2X in its place.
A good all-around taper for seatrout fishing.
  • Super Simple Three Section Lake Leader

    5 variations
    • This is based on the classic 60/20/20 formula, and can be varied in length depending on the desired fishing depth.
  • Super Simple Two Section Bank Leader

    5 variations
    • Another extremely simple and short leader for tossing heavy streamers from the bank into a current. Presentation isn't the aim here, but getting the fly out to swing in the current is. The fly weight helps turn the leader over, and the weight typically also calls for a short leader to get control in the cast.
  • Super Simple Two Section Boat Leader

    15 variations
    • It doesn't get much simpler than this! A very short leader for streamer fishing from a boat in current, where delicate casting or presentation isn't required. Adjust length and thickness to fit the fly you want to cast.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
