Loch Harray Trout Fly

So the Monkey was developed for the Spring Invitational on Harray to be fished on 10th June 2011. After chatting to James Bews (Harray expert) we noted the fish would be starting to come out of the skerries a bit looking for caenis feeders should they conditions suit. So we wanted to develop a fly that would appeal to the midge feeders and the caenis feeders. The little white muddler head would hopefully help catch the fish looking for white in the water and the body was a good pattern for midge feeders. Lots of trigger points on the fly. Orange butt, mirage, hopper legs and white head. The idea was to fish the pattern over the skerries high in the water. Once we lost sight of the bottom back in again. We also used it between two hulks in open water. It worked really well for us especially while practicing. On comp day there was a huge caenis hatch the night before that moved the fish out to deeper water a bit. It’s still used to this date and works just as well on Watten and our hill lochs. We treated the seals fur body with floatant so it sits dry for a little time before twiddling it back high in the water.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
