These are two patterns Cutcliffe discusses within the text of the book and mentions how he uses these as his stretcher fly on a multiple fly rig. The stretcher fly is the "anchor" fly or the one farthest away from the rod tip. It anchors the set up and "stretches" out the rig so you can bounce a dropper fly on the surface or what he calls the "bob" fly. In the text he mentions great success with using some flash as the "tail" on these patterns.
Many of the patterns he lists at the end of the book can also be used as a stretcher but these two are an idea he tried and had luck with it.
