Chernobyl Ants are some of the most popular and effective terrestrial and stonefly foam dries ever created. They are so popular that there are tons of variations of these flies, and the Chubby Chernobyl variation is probably the most popular of the variations. And there is good reason for this, they are some of the best indicator type flies out there. That huge tuff of yarn on top of the fly is super visible, and I don't know any situation where you wouldn't be able to see it, unless you're fishing in the dark. Not only are they very visible, but they are also very effective as well. Great for a general style terrestrial to mimic bugs like hoppers, crickets, and even spiders, funny thing is with the name, you would think it would also mimic an Ant but, I dont think it does too well. Unless you tie them extremely small. Not only is it a great terrestrial imitator, but in my opinion, where it really shines is as an adult stonefly representation. And some of the best trout fishing you will ever do is during stonefly and salmon fly hatches. But when fishing for warm water fish like bass or sunfish, they work incredibly well also.
So not only are these very effective as I stated above, but they are also fairly easy to tie, and uses inexpensive materials. The foam is very cost effective and one swatch will tie you dozens of these flies, the rubber legs are also able to tie dozens with one package, and the fiber, when using what I used can tie 100's with one hank. Dubbing as well is usually very inexpensive. So you can spend just a few bucks, and an afternoon, and tie up a couple dozen of these flies, filling up a box quickly and cheaply with flies that will catch fish in many situations.
Make sure you check out my sponsor Risen Fly. They have amazing deals on hooks and beads, but also sell some of the best fly rods Ive ever used, and at a price that is very reasonable. With the cost of fly fishing going up every year, it's refreshing to find great quality gear at prices we can all afford. Best off they are offering all of you a discount just for being my subscriber. So go to www.risenfly.com and type in McFly at checkout for 15% off your first order with them.
Also dont forget to pick up one of my fly boxes. I have both magnetic backed and silicone backed, if these sell well I plan on getting more styles as well and maybe even bringing back the shirts that everyone loved years ago. Check out my amazon store front to pick up the boxes. - www.amazon.com/shops/McFlyAngler
