The Crease Fly

No comments yet

The Crease Fly was invented by Captain Joe Blados, who designed this to fish saltwater fish. According to Google, he was looking for a cheaper and easier alternative to balsa wood poppers. And honestly I think he did make a great alternative. This fly pops very well with that large hollow cavity made by the folded over foam, and this spits so much water it is insane. This also tends to start a walk the dog motion whenever I strip it in, making it really attractive for bass and saltwater fish. It represents a wounded baitfish trying to stay alive on the surface. I decided to use flexible resin around the outside of the popper, and mixing in some pixy dust glitter to give it the appearance of fish scales. Overall, I think this is one of my favorite saltwater poppers, but I definitely fish this for bass as well. The nice thing about using white foam, is you can color these to whatever colors you want. I made a brown one today, to represent mullet in the gulf while going fishing for redfish. However, you could totally tie these in chartreuse, or hot pink, all white, all black, etc. Any color you think the fish will be attracted to.

You can also experiment with different tail materials. Try craft fur, or other synthetics if you wish. You could maybe even use feathers for the tail. I can see some alternatives with adding rubber legs sticking out the side of the foam. Which I plan on trying some of those soon. I will say, this is a rather new fly for me to try tying. I have tied up a couple dozen already, and obviously need a little more practice to make these come out perfectly. But so far, I like them and will continue using them for poppers in both saltwater and freshwater fishing.

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
