Leisenring’s Coachman Wet Fly
Leisenring’s Coachman.
This is number 5 of his list of Favorite Flies
Hook: 12, 13
Silk: orange
Hackle: bright red cock
Body: bronze colored peacock herl
Wings: Landrail primary or secondary
I used a Mustad wetfly hook, YLI Orange Silk, red cock feather, bronze herl and slips from Peacock support feathers.
Peacock herl dyed Magenta is a fabulous substitute.
Landrail does not have super easy substitutes...the coloring of the feather is a rusty/gingery dun grey. Chukar tail feathers are often mentioned a good substitute and I have a Chukar and the color is quite close. On my skin the feather were in rough shape. I did notice that the secondaries on the Chukar were close. I also found the primaries/secondaries from a French Partridge wing are close...they lean a bit more olive...but closer than say natural mallard.
Enjoy!

Long story longer
The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
