The McFly's Foam Shrimp is a fly I developed to fish for redfish in hard bottom flats where reds are tailing. This is not a searching fly, but a site casting fly. If you drop this fly in front of a redfish, it will almost always get eaten. It is not overly weighted, so it doesn't slap the water with most casts, and it sinks slowly to the bottom, which is a natural presentation. This means you will not spook the reds, but instead will entice them to eat.
My buddy and I found some amazing flats down in the gulf where I go fish. We saw reds tailing everywhere but had trouble getting them to bite. The high wind meant big bulky flies were difficult to cast, and heavily weighted ones would seem to spook the fish. So I decided to create a fly that could fish these flats with more success. After a few reiterations, I came up with the fly I am tying for you today. The McFly's Foam Shrimp. I wanted a fly that was not overly heavy, but could fish hook point up. I didn't want to snag on the bottom, but couldn't seem to flip the hook without adding too much weight. So I decided to bend the hook slightly in order to offset the line. Which allowed me to add a lighter weight. Then to further insure the hook point was turned, I added some foam on top to help add buoyancy on the top part of the fly. The way this sits on the bottom keeps the hook point out of debris and rocks, insuring I dont snag up on the bottom. This has become my most productive redfish fly to date. The first time I fished this fly, every single redfish I casted to ate the fly. It was like magic. Since then, I dont go down to my redfish flats spot without this fly. This would be an amazing bonefish and permit fly as well, when fishing in oyster beds because it will not snag up on the oysters.
I found this also represents a crayfish quite well, and have caught quite a few bass on this fly. It would be a great carp fly as well. Just make sure you tie it on a lighter wire hook for easier hook sets.
