Puterbaugh Foam Caddis

No comments yet

The Puterbaugh Foam Caddis is a classic pattern that is extremely buoyant due to the foam body, very visible on top of the water, and great for fishing in fast moving riffles or when you want a fly that is easy to see. According to Google this fly has been around since 1964 and was developed by Don Puterbaugh to fish the fast moving riffles on the Arkansas River in Colorado. I personally like to fish this with a light nymph dropped off the back, since it's so visible. I replace my indicator with this fly, and since it's got a hook I have the chance of hooking up if the trout go after the fly. Which has happened to my indicators more than a few times.

This is a very easy, and quick fly to tie. It's super simple as well, using only 3 materials not including the hook and thread. Being simple and quick to tie, you can fill fly boxes in no time of different colors and sizes of this to match the hatch in your local streams and rivers. As stated in the video, a saddle is really great to use, as the feathers are long and easy to hackle the fly with. However they are rather expensive and usually only have a couple of sizes mixed in. If you get a rooster cape made for dry flies, you can usually pull a wide range of sizes off the cape, tying flies from size 20, up to even 6 or larger. And the larger feathers also give you the ability to pull tail fibers off for other flies like parachute Adams and the like. Or even tie streamers with them like a wooly bugger. So I highly recommend picking up a couple capes. Whiting sells a starter pack, with 4 colors of half capes, which is a great place to start if you dont have good dry fly hackle. I will link below to that starter pack.

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
