The Slump Buster fly pattern is one of my favorite small streamers to fish. It works great on fast moving rivers and rivers with deep holes or even lakes. It gets down quickly with the cone head, and the pine squirrel zonker strips move really well In the water enticing fish. The Slump Buster represents a sculpin baitfish very well, but when tied in lighter colors it can mimic other baitfish as well. The way I like to fish it, especially when trying to mimic a sculpin is to dead drift it deep into a hole, then right as it gets into the hole, create tension in the line and it will dart away, looking like a sculpin fleeing a large trout. Usually I get a strike as soon as that tension is made. Which then leaves me with a great setup for a good hook set. In fact I dont really even need to set the hook as the tension in the line hooks itself.
These have a really nice jigging motion when stripped also, which also can entice a fish, especially ones that are aggressive. Quick little strips through a lake can get strikes as well from both trout, and bass. In fact this fly can catch a host of different fish species. I just mentioned trout and bass, but ive actually caught catfish, carp, sunfish and more on this fly.
These are fairly easy to tie, once you get the hang of winding the wire up through the zonker strip. I can tie about 10 per hour, making it quick to tie up a full box of these in different sizes and colors. They are also inexpensive as well. Especially if you spring for the full skin. The full skin cots about $20 at the time of making this video, but can tie 100+ of these flies. Then if you get your hooks and cone heads from Risen, you can actually tie these for about 60-65 cents each, which really is not too bad at all.
Speaking of getting your hooks and beads at Risen, make sure you check them out. They have amazing deals on more than just hooks and beads, but they offer some of the best fly rods Ive ever used, and at a price that is very reasonable. With the cost of fly fishing going up every year, it's refreshing to find great quality gear at prices we can all afford. Best off they are offering all of you a discount just for being my subscriber. So go to www.risenfly.com and type in McFly at checkout for 15% off your first order with them.
Also dont forget to pick up one of my fly boxes. I have both magnetic backed and silicone backed, if these sell well I plan on getting more styles as well and maybe even bringing back the shirts that everyone loved years ago. Check out my amazon store front to pick up the boxes. - www.amazon.com/shops/McFlyAngler
