The ‘Tobiskongen’ (the-king-of-sand-eel) is a classic baitfish fly with no difficult tying moments. It is relatively quick to tie and the few materials are relatively gentle economically, so you can tolerate losing a few flies while fishing, without getting tears in your eyes. We have had the Danish fly fisher and fly tyer Karl Aaby behind the fly vise to tie his favorite fly to his beloved fishing for sea bass. Karl himself says about the fly:"I rarely find that the fly size is critical when it comes to sea bass. My standard ‘Tobiskongen’ is about 10 cm long, but both slightly larger and slightly smaller models easily disappear in the sea bass's large mouth. Most baitfish flies have a darker back and a lighter belly, but on the ‘Tobiskongen’ I have spared the back-color and I actually don't miss it – but I have added some orange dubbing as a hot-spot. Instead of spending time changing fly lines when current conditions or water depth vary, I instead tie the flies with slightly different types and sizes of eyes. Still for the fly to always fish upside-down, but a heavier fly will of course get to the bottom faster, and it will have a slightly more aggressive jigging action in the water."
