So it's March... and according to the almanarc March indicates the beginning of spring. The first week obviously hasn't read the almanarc! It has been bitterly cold here with temperatures below the freezing point.
I have been out fishing a few times already, but action has been slow and the fish few and long between. I usually say the the fish don't go on land when it's cold, but I honestly have my doubts!
On the other hand most coastal fishers here know that fishing doesn't start until the temperature rises just a bit - and that is the water temperature. Right now it is only just over the freezing point and we need some days with warm winds and maybe a bit of sun. Then things will really start happening.
Already during my last outing withy fellow fly fisherman, journalist and writer Thomas Vinge, we saw plenty life in the water in the shape of small gammarids and mysids. We saw no fish, though, so the trees really don't grow into the sky.
This coming weekend seems to be the first weekend with spring temperatures, and I certainly plan to go fishing. And my plan is to catch a fish or two... I have promised another author - American Gary Soucie - some pictures of Danish coastal style Woolly Buggers in action for his upcoming book Woolly Wisdom, which features some of my flies.
I am anxiously looking forward to both: the book and the fishing trip.
