#21 Granite Hill Smelt - Darren MacEachern

Tied by: Darren MacEachern
Originated by: Duane Vigue

Hook: Gaelic Supreme Mike Martinek Rangeley Streamer hook #2 8XL
Thread: Black 70 denier
Tag: Oval silver tinsel
Body: Flat silver tinsel
Ribbing: Oval silver tinsel
Belly: Light grey bucktail then white bucktail
Underwing: 4-6 bleached and dyed red peacock swords (I've used red dyed eye herl)
Wing: 2 silver badger hackles flanked by light blue dun hackle
Shoulder: Ringneck pheasant rump
Eye: Jungle cock nail
Head: Black

Notes: This is one of Duane's spectacular smelt imitations. He named the pattern after the area he grew up, Granite Hill, Manchester. There are a number of quarries filled in with water where Duane spent time swimming with his friends. The look of the fly was is similar to the quarry walls, hence the name.

Thanks Kelly. I love Duane's patterns, and especially this one. hopefully we'll see a few originals before the year is up. The blue is the light grey dun also called a blue dun.

Since you got this far …

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
