#118 Comrade - Darren MacEachern and Cameron Mortenson

Tied by: Darren MacEachern

Originated by: Darren MacEachern and Cameron Mortenson

Hook: VMC B-17 #2

Thread: 6/0 White

Body: Tie in 3 sections of narrow bands of black/red/black then yellow floss then coated with several coats of varnish or resin

Rib: Silver ovel tinsel

Belly: White bucktail

Underwing: Peacock herl

Wing: 2 grizzly dyed red hackles flanked by yellow dyed grizzly

Shoulder: Grizzly hen cape

Eye: Jungle cock

Head: Black

Notes: This pattern was a joint effort between Darren MacEachern of Streamers 365 and Cameron Mortenson of The Fiberglass Manifesto. The inspiration for the pattern comes from the colors in the Comrade artwork and an attempt to give the body a glassy look. The pattern incorporates a "glassed" body, achieved by applying 4-5 coats of resin. With the segments on the streamer, and allowance for each coat of resin to completely dry, it is a time consuming fly to tie.

The Comrade artwork was done by Rob McAbee of Bug Slinger and Nomad Designs. Rob was someone who Cameron met through writing T.F.M. and they have always had a very good relationship. Cameron gave him a couple ideas that I had for the Comrade artwork and Rob put it all together.

"I am really happy how it came out and besides being the first full color artwork that I've offered it's also a big edgier than the various artworks that has been used on other T.F.M. t-shirts in the past. The Comrade artwork is eye catching and it was neat to incorporate one of my favorite vintage fly reels, the J.W. Young Valdex, into the design scheme too. "

That is one good looking streamer. And, in addition to aesthetics, it will also surely catch some fish.

New to fly fishing...soaking in as much as possible. Have graphite now, is the feel better with glass?

I wouldn't say one was "better" than the other, but it's a bit of a different feel and a bit more forgiving. There area quite a few inexpensive glass rods to check out. Have a look through The Fibreglass Manifesto archives for some ideas and a ton more info.

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
