Loretta Parent Streamers

Honouring those who have come before us is a strong theme we see throughout the small community of traditional streamer tyers. We tie the flies of the pioneers, make new variations based on them, and make mistakes trying to recreate them, giving way to unintended new variants. Loretta has chosen to create her streamer submission based of a handful of New Brunswick salmon flies converted to streamers. It's not an easy task to select just a few from a province steeped high with world class fly tyers.

Sadly, on March 1st, 2014, Robert Marc Madore passed away. Marc was a huge influence on Loretta as both a friend and mentor. Marc was generous with his time and patience teaching Loretta how to bind thread, tinsel, feathers and hit onto hooks in pursuit of the vigorous Atlantic salmon. He was a master fly tyer, known worldwide for his intricately dressed classic salmon flies and streamers, taught Loretta how to tie, but also instilled a deep passion for the salmon and what makes them tick. Check below for a video of Marc tying one of his signature fly patterns for Atlantic Salmon, the Madorabou Assasin.

Robert Marc Madore Robert Marc Madore

It is in the memory of Marc that Loretta dedicates this series of streamers, including her own creation, The Madore, a nod to the man behind the vise. The colours she chose for the pattern represent the three most important things in Marc's life. His wife and Loretta's good friend Line Madore, her favourite colour is pink and they were partners for life. Secondly, the colours of the Canadian Airborne Regiment, wine, white and gold. Lastly, Marc retired as a Chief Warrant Officer of the Regiment in 1995, and the green of the uniform has been represented.

The collection also features a number of other prominent New Brunswick patterns including a couple from the late Warren Duncan. Loretta has transformed 2 of his patterns, the Picture Province and The Undertaker. The Picture Province was tied using elements of the New Brunswick landscape in mind and is the designated salmon fly for the province. The Undertaker is a dark fly devised in 1979 and was developed for the salmon flying up the mighty Miramichi River.

The series also includes some of famous conversion such as the Rusty Rat, The Priest and the Blue Charm, all converted to streamer versions. THE rusty Rat was a favourite pattern of Warren Duncan and he was well known for ;tying the pattern while reciting The Cremation of Sam McGee, a poem by Robert Service. In addition to the well known salmon patterns, Loretta included some local gems within the collection. The Henderson is a pattern created by angler and author, the late Albert John Henderson. Who wrote "The Meandering Writings of a Master Angler" in 1993, and is much sought after since only 100 copies were ever made. The pattern works best in low clear water tied on smaller sized doubles.

The LT Special was designed by the late Lawerence Rexford Taylor of Fredericton Junction, New Brunswick. The pattern was fashioned loosely on the Cains River series of flies and colours from the Mickey Finn, Copper Killer, The Cains Copper, The Chief Needabeh and the Allie's Shrimp were combined to create the killer pattern. Mr. Taylor worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway and was known to tie the flies with his friend and mentor while sitting in a poorly lit caboose when travelling on the trains.

The most interesting named pattern comes from the vise of the late Cliff Brown, the High and Dirty Nashwaak. It is a hair wing streamer tied for fishing, well, high and dirty water. The name is a nod to the Nashwaak River where Cliff served many years as a salmon fishing guide.

Thanks Loretta for sharing your collection and keeping these patterns and angler fresh in our memories. We will be auctioning off The Madore streamer and wet fly along with a beautiful box made by Jeff Jones with the proceeds being donated to Project Healing Waters Canada.

Awesome streamer conversions of tried and true salmon patterns. I may have to tie a few of these for the opener! The Miramichi still has plenty of ice, and once she opens, big streamers like these should be perfect for getting down to where the kelts are!

I don't mean to be picky, but "Nashwack" should be spelled "Nashwaak"

Thank you Kelly. I wished he could have seen them. He was so sick when I was working on these and was gone before I could finish them. I know he would have been very pleased with them.

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
