Good morning,
I am looking for a material that doesn't freeze. You mentioned in one of your articles about such a material. It repels water and doesn't freeze. Can you tell me more about this material. I am not making waders but am trying to work up something for my 85 year old father who still likes being outside.
Thanks
Chris

Anyone have experience fishing in Roatan, Honduras? Will be there in March at Mango Creek Lodge, hoping to have success with Bonefish, maybe some tarpon and Permit.
Thanks,

G'day Kelly...
Thanks for your kind words... 'small internet world!
Your tyz look [b:679c6d0995][i:679c6d0995]great[/i:679c6d0995][/b:679c6d0995]... Get 'em wet and dance with some fish!

Driftern...
I agree... simple and easy stuff can be special...
besides showing off good technique, the fish seem to approve as well...
Synthetics are always evolving and get more cosmic all the time, but I still prefer natural fur and feathers... they stand the test of time...
A simple wing of sparse buck tail [less is more] with a subtle touch of flash, topped with peacock herl or rhea...
That's the ticket!...
Ray's is a fine example of simplistic beauty and balance... my evolution exercise was a fun freestyle escape from set pattern tying... there's no denying the basics...
For advanced study, Davis Nelson [davidstrout on stripersonline surftalk] is a "master" of the natural...
Technically refined and balanced... his flys have the "IT" factor and influence much of what strive for!
a bit brisk... Time for tyin'...

LOL...Pete, I didn't recognize your profile name, but I sure recognize those gorgeous flies...makes my Ray's Fly look pretty pitiful...I need to test it out, and make some more.
I'm Kelkay, you may recognize that nick. :D

Pat,

The brass bead is under the foam on the hook shank, while the eyes are in the front of the fly, where you'd expect the eyes to be. Omit the bead and the fly floats. Add the bead and the fly sinks slowly.

The pattern above calls for a brass bead and glass eyes Is this correct

Martin,

This is the ocean, more precisely Vejle Fjord. There is very little salt in the water and it freezes quickly. But it was a very nice day.

Thank you so much for this! :D

I 'm a new fly fishing and I was wondering what was that white line they have attached to my reel when I bought all the equipment. I thought that this was a beggininers line to test casting etc... So when I bought the fly line (WF 6 F), I removed more than half of that (100 yrds) white line, that I didn't know what it was. I tought it would be better if I attached the fly line in this white line so I left about 40 yards. When I read about the "backing line" in google searches, I used a Sliding Knot to connect again the backing line that i cought. So I have again about 100 yds of it. I hope it doesnt matter that about half way in the backing line there is a Knot. I finally used the Albright that you have above to connect the backing to the leader!

Thank you so much,
Happy new year!

Kostis

Martin,

Nice fish. Wish I had caught fish like that 20 days ago. I was out a couple of days ago. Cold and beautiful, but empty.

Happy new year to all!

My wife and I are planning a trip to Strobel in 2011, but so far we keep getting redirected to Loop, which is hard on the bank! Any information on your lodging at strobel would be so much appreciated. We live in Alaska and would be happy to exchange information if interested. Awsome trip!

Welcome to the forum and to GFF as a whole. Your small stream looks very intriguing! Nice photo!

But the rod is indeed odd! It looks as if the handle has been turned upside down.

Martin,

You're right about that rod - it's a piece of work OK. No, the handle is not mounted upside down. Here's what Montgomery Ward had to say about the rod in their 1959 Outdoor Sports catalog:

"[b:dddc5798ae]All Purpose Panfish Rod.[/b:dddc5798ae] Land a Blue-gill, Brim or Perch with sturdy 2-piece solid fiber glass "responsive action" rod. Also suited for other still or fly fishing. Polished aluminum fly rod yreel sest. Chrome plated ferrule with 4 snake guides and tip top set in contrasting cluster of nylon windings. Composition cork grip, polished Aluminum reel seat with screw locking ring. Packed in plastic bag. Actual wt. 4 ozs., 7 ft. length. [i:dddc5798ae]Mailable[/i:dddc5798ae]. [b:dddc5798ae]$3.75[/b:dddc5798ae]"

It came with a open frame reel ($0.89). I "upgraded" to the weighted Pflueger 1495 to get the rod and reel into balance.

Nothing to brag about, but for a kid of 11 it was all that I needed to get started in fly fishing. As I said, I still fish it regularly; sort of sentimental favorite.

Would make a great "guide fly" for bass or pickerel as you could make up extra bodies and replace them on the treble hook as the fish tear them up. This could save money on hooks. Pretty sure Mustad wouldn't agree!

again another great fly, I use a fly thats similar called a lighting bug the pattern is a TMC 200R # 10-16, 6/0 thread black, black goose biot tail, black holo tinsel (med) body, black uni-wire rib, black thin skin wing case with black flashabou accent, black ice dubbing thorax, three to four turns of black hen hackle, you can add a black bead if you like or not, caught my largest trout of the season on a # 14 beadheaded version a 22" redband trout fom the chewaucan river in october 09, sometimes you need to visit the dark side, keep up the informantable arctile's and let the fur and feathers fly.

Again another well written arctile,This fly is the results of leaving a box of nymphs alone in the dark wierd things result from innerbreading you mix a biot bug with a flashback hares ears, and throw in a bead head and wala you have a universal nymph good fly use both the hare's ear, black, and dark olive version with great results keep up the good arctiles.

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
