Hi I'm from the panhandle of Florida and I'm looking for some ideas about what flies to use for large mouth bass/ pike for top water and mostly for lower down in the water column. I fish ponds and lakes, rivers and very clear spring feed streams. Do you have any suggestions?

Let me thank you for this wide description how to solve the problem with the loops!
The only problem that remains is how to get a spool of 25 m I can use to make myself my own loops at home!?
Thank you.

I found your web site and reviewed the fly patterns shown there. I want to know if the flys can be purchased? Especially the White fly regular and with eyes added? I have interests in other flies on your site.

I really like this layout. I am going to try to build one for myself, not much on woodworking, although I am good at drawing things.
My wife is always complaining about all of the stuff lying around the living room when I work.
I have an idea that might be good. If you built a docking station (similar to the concept used for a laptop computer) that would have drawers for supplies, etc. You could then work say in the garage with this set up or take the top off and use it while watching TV, for tying flies anywhere. It would also give you a place to store it between TV time and tying flies.

Hi Ripley

Great article, its the only one Ive seen in English about lithuanian trout fishing. I live in Vilnius and plan a visit to the Ula. I havn't fished in years but I am keen to get back into it again.

Cheers.

Ben,

I'd suggest looking into places in Jutland - the peninsula north of Germany. The central and eastern part offers all types of fishing - stream, lake and ocean - within short distances. The areas around Silkeborg, Skanderborg and Horsens will be good for you as a fly fisherman and close by Aarhus, which is a larger town.

You can fly into Billund and have a short drive or into Copenhagen and have more miles to cover to get there.

Martin

Those are some very nice pics Andre, thanks very much.
I am off to fish the Tongariro tonight and I hope to have as good a time as you obviously did in Norway.
All the best.
Mike.

Hi Martin,

I will be visiting Denmark next summer, probably in August. My family and I will likely rent a summer house. Do you have any suggestions as to a particular town to stay in to put me into the best fly fishing water? I fish both fresh and saltwater. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Ben Winkler

Patrick,

Of course you can use red floss in stead! No problem. No fly pattern is set in stone, and you can always improvise. I have used yellow and tan as well, but just like the orange color.

hi,
i am 15 years old and have been fishing since i was 6 and has been tying since i was 14. Would it be that much of a bad influence if i used red floss instead?

These wetflies are the most beautiful I ever have seen. They are as high class as classical salmon flies.

Hi Martin
I love San Pedro. I stayed twice at El Pescador, but it's getting too expensive for me to stay there by myself. I usually bring a friend with me, but he cannot make this trip, so I will have to travel alone.I fished with guides and also shoreline fished North of the resort. Which side of the bridge is better, North or South? What is the best way to go? By Bike, Kayak or Go cart? I have a hard time catching bones from the shoreline on a fly. What is the secret? The fish can't see the fly because the Tyrtle Grass is too dense. What resorts do you recommend to stay? I emailed many resorts. and narrowed it down to three (3). Reef Condos and Villas Resort right next to Coco Locos are North of the bridge. Xanadu Resort and Carribbean Villas are located South of the bridge. If you have something in mind let me know. Some of these resorts offer Bikes and Kayaks for free.Martin, great article, "On Your Own".

Tight Lines
Richie.

I've read Keiths autographed book on thunder creek. this book was given to Vern Nyquist who fished with Keith in Iceland in 1981. Vern passed away a few years back in Connecticut. I also fished with vern, a great sportsman.

I should be in guys, hopefully my wife will not decide to hurry up with her birthgiving :D

No praise too high. These pages are a real exibition space.

As for bronze mallard winging, I've never managed to match opposing slips. I've reasoned that there is insufficient barbing on the fibres to prevent splaying when locked with thread. One technique, and the only alternative I know of, is to trim a slip 3 times the size of the desired width of wing and "fold" or "roll" each end inwards. The resulting laminate of 3 slips can be manipulated between the fingers to shape the final wing profile.

This will give a fairly solid profile to the wing, but the fineness of the mallard fibres will allow sufficient movement to suggest life in the water. Definitely not as delicate as your work in these pages but who knows, with your skill at the vice, you might take "folding" or "rolling" to a new level.

In appreciation............Stephen Scanlan

Guys,

I'm still counting heads here. It seems we will be maybe 8-10 people and some friends might join us along the road, so we need either a couple of large summer houses or some scout cottage or whatnot.

The catering will be laid back and delicious - and most likely self made - and I expect the whole thing to be fairly inexpensive.

I'm looking into a couple of options and will let you all know.

Martin

congratulations guys !
thanks for all the hard work that you have put into this site, hardly a day goes by where I dont visit GFF.
keep it up.

Since you got this far …

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
