Hi Mike,Hi Tobias,

Thanks for the comments, i feel the same way. My reason for posting this was the attitude shown by some anglers ( also flyfishers) when a fish is kept for the pot... although it is legal, and within the clubs policy.

tight lines,

Ruan.

I used to make a similar "fly" using a piece of balsa wood or a piece of a foam earplug to fish for smaller creek chubs in Pennsylvania.

Hi Ruan,

to release the fish you caught and buy fish for dinner afterwards, seems stoopid to me. Mostly alle the fishes you can buy are caught with a nets. If you would know how harmful netfishing is to the environment, you would probably keep your fish for dinner and resign from buying the fish in a shop. Even aquaculture harms nature in so many ways, that I won't buy these fishes. You should get yourself THIS BOOK and you will see which one is the better way.

It is about the joy of making it yourself. The feeling of being in touch with past traditions and learning a new aspect of the craft. We do it because we can. It is not about how much it costs or the time expended. It is about the pride you feel when you use it, knowing that you made it. You can not buy that feeling.

Hi Ruan, personaly I think if you like to eat fish and it is legal to do so you should go for it! I keep maybe 1 in 50 or 60 trout that I catch and the fishery here can certainly sustain that. Indeed in Taupo it is encouraged to take some trout for the pot as there is only a certain number of fish the environment can sustain so we need to cull a few to keep up the condition and size of the fish.
They are lovely hot smoked.
All the best.
Mike.

Ripley,

I'm very sorry if I offended you.

I was feebly trying to express the fact that we would miss you.

The word might not have been wisely chosen, but there was no deeper meaning.

Extortioner..?

Quote: Extortion, outwresting, or exaction is a criminal offense which occurs when a person unlawfully obtains either money, property or services from a person, entity, or institution, through coercion.

Really...

I hope you and the rest of you silent bunch, don't think and mean this..?

A quote, label and name I take seriously.

Ripley

Rip-van-extortioner,

I will make sure that no one pays you in advance, so that we are sure to see you at the water! You can't fail us just because you are planning a leisurely walk in a Mongolian park!

Glenn's wax or Overton's wonder wax ? this is a sticky subject. the best i've found to be close to this is Meredith Wax made in western New York. althought the wax is only made twice a year (in the fall and spring) as the rosin he uses is at it best at that time of year makes it harder to get. but well worth it... this is just a FYI..

Due to endless training and expedition preparation, I will not be attending this years GFF summit. Sorry. Other priorities call...

I may get time to visit for an hour or two during training, (collecting donations), but doubtful if I will wetting a fly.

That doesn't stop you all kindly donating DKK 50,- (or as much as you see fit) to the two worthy children's charities I am supporting - namely - UNICEF and Hope & Homes for Children and my effort.

If I don't hear from you, I WILL be visiting the beach with my collection box. That's no joke. I may even stand at the gate as you drive through.

I can hear the silence now. Thanks in advance!

Regards
Ripley

Folks,

To address the different issues:

Paul: moving will not do the trick. We will have to go far into October, and that means no Martin - I'll (unfortunately) be in BC by then. And October is cold and wet...

Atli: Self catering might sound like something charming, but sitting down at a ready table with warm food and hot coffee is more like what we want after and before a whole day by the water. And I will not be the one shopping, cooking and not least coordinating cleaning up after you people on Sunday with half of the bunch already spread out over most of Northern Europe! I'll stay with the full service model!

All others: I'm looking into some scout camps close to the water on West Fyn, which have the space but will require hiring kitchen and cleaning staff. If that does not give any results before Monday it's Odense.

Dear Ruben,

For the step by step pictures of the fly I used hook in size 8 and 4 mm. golden head.
Most of the samples that I find in bulgarian rivers the caddis larvas are in houses made of little stones (gravel) or twigs (little sticks of trees) and when I take them out and measure them they have the size of a fly tied on # 8 hook, but not a problem of course if you make smaller paterns, you have to match the size of your local insects.
The fur hare is very small amount, spread in the loop, just as you said "lightly", you may see it in step 5.

Best regards,

Rado

I know that the weekend has been set, and that some of us have already planned a vacation during that time (me included), but could another weekend maybe solve the problem with the hostel in Odense? I know with enough advanced notice, there could still be time for make the necessary arrangements.
Just a thought.

Paul

Hi all,

While having the occasional beer by the water during previous summits, discussions about the optimal accommodation for the venue have come up quite regularly. Some of the most interesting ideas have involved staying close to the water, opening up for a chance of prime-time fishing early in the morning and late in the evening, and this really sounds appalling in the afternoon when fishing has been kind of slow but you just know it will pick up as the evening comes…

I’m all for self catering, preferably in walking distance from the water, but we have to realise that for an event like this one with 30-40 participants this demands a fair amount of discipline and coordination. I have been involved in 4 days fishing trips with 15-20 participants to the “middle of nowhere” with everything collective a few times and the main issue is to get as many as possible to take on some responsibility. There are always those that seem to dodge all tasks, but defining smaller groups with defined tasks in advance really helps.

So for me, preferably not city centre Odense (although the “within walking distance to the shoppingarea” really sounds exciting), but it won’t stop me from participating.

I’ll try some contacts I have in the Middlefart area, but from what Martin has written previously I’m not really that optimistic.

Cheers,
/atli

I wish I could help... All I can do from my part is search on the net.

I have sent you my idea Martin...

Believe me Odense is no picnic and will, I think, cause no end of problems. I totally would not recommend it due to the lack of parking.

Martin has my idea. He can chew it over and if interested, post it.

I can help, and will, where I can with regard to this...

The feather clip is a Marc Petitjean Tool.
Most fly shops will have it or will be able to get it, You can also order it on the web.

Hi Darryl, thanks for the great pictures, now can you tell me where I can get a feather clip like that?

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
