Kai,
Good to see you're up for another Summit! Keep a fly or two for me - your last one worked the trick on my leader.
Look after that squirrel!
Les
Rip,
good point.
Maybe we should all tie enough of our favorite fly to give one to each participant and we will all have a Summit Fly Box 2007?
Kasper
Kai's fly does work. I have seen it in action and snapped the picture to boot!
He might turn up with a box full of his winners but I'm darned sure he won't be leav'in with em!!!

Now I know why it turns yellow... I've tying almost all my flies for many years with epoxy using toothpics and mixing over a pape sheets!!!!
There is no problem with small or dark heads. For poppers I use an epoxy resin made for finishing furniture surfaces. It is more liquid than ordinary epoxy and cures in 45 min., but turning the fly it is O.K. It lasts absolutely clear for many years, no one of my poppers tyed five or six years ago is yellowed.
I buy it from an Art Store. It is used for a glass finish on tables and for "country art".
Great link the wetahook.com, thanks Anselmo.
The Partridge and Hare is certainly a fantastic fly. The entire line of soflhackles are worthy of inclusion in any well-tempered kit. I carry them from a size 8 to a size 18 and I've caught just about everything on them. if you want to try something just a bit different, use a bright flourescent orange thread to tie the P&H - it gives the fly a fine ruddy glow when wet. Dub lightly and use the brown hackles from a partridge. With this variation I'll often leave an 8" tag of thread from the tie in at the beginning, tie in the hackle butt first at the head (Stewart style), dubb the body and then wrap the hackle [i:07a1238058]back[/i:07a1238058] towards the tail. I'll then rib the body and wind through the hackle using the tag end and tie the whole thing off with a small neat head. tied this way the fly in almost indestructible, it has a great ribbed effect, and it tapers naturally towards the tail end.

Hi Nan,
hi Les,
it's very good to hear that you are going to join in!
But you don't have to fish in the cages, Rip and Steve had fished the first day last year.
I've tied a brand new fly, of witch Paul after our last trip said: "If I had that fly in my box,
it was surely the last thing I want to have on the end of my leader!"
But it catches - that's proven for sure.
Looking forward to see you all again!
Kai
Hi Brian
Leervis/garrick, elf/shad, grunter at De Mond, and Kabeljou will be the prime species that time of the year on fly. Poppers, decievers, clousers and some prawn patterns for the grunter etc all work. You just have to put in the hours. Get one of the Nedbank guides, they will give you excellent info. Regards Korrie Broos
Hi Joe,
one of my absolute favourites in this style of tying is the partridge and hares ear. Especially with difficult trout and grayling fished upstream dead drift with the occasional rod tip twitch to move it has done a lot for me. The trick is to lift it just a little and get the soft hackle to move.

Icth.........that's gross.
Very interesting article. You mention sea trout in Gruensee, how come?
I would love to get some more info on fishing Struisbaai and De Mond area in December what fly what fish weather etc
Hi Les & Nan,
It would be an absolute pleasure for you to join Steve and myself on the Friday. The cages will be fully stocked and bursting at the welds.
We can arrange any details closer to the date.
By the way...It's your drinks round isn't it?
Regards
Rip
Rip,
I might come with you guys on the Friday this year - to find out where you hide those cages...
How can I prepare better for this year... Bring a shark-rod? I think I'll get some lessons instead! Looking forward to it.
Here's to friends old and new.
Les
Hey Les,
My mission is to get you something bigger this year. Remember the cub / scout motto?
Be prepared!!!
Rip
After last year's success, both fishingwise and even more importantly, the friendly atmosphere, I am not surprised to see so many of last year's participants already signed up.
Looking forward to see you all.
Cheers,
Atli
I am very interested in participating but this year it's impossible as we have the World Tuscany Open which is a correspendence Fly Tying competion and the prize giving will take place in those exact days!! I will be participating as part of the Italian Bamboo Rodmakers Association.
However, I will make a point of being there next year so that I can meet you all and especially see my good friend Kasper again!!
Cheers

1. Cages will be placed at certain intervals along the coast.
2. In addition we are considering divers that will swim around and physically hook the sea trout on my fly.
I will have a couple of nice sea trout in the back of my car for those that wish to buy one at the weekend.
Great article Tobias.
One can only imagine the scenes in real life but your pictures speak a thousand words.
Have I ever done fly fishing in a helmet?
Actually - Yes! Once in Coeur d' Alene in Idaho back in 2002. Some of the streams are like the one in your picture "Valentin gorge". Fly fishing in a helmet is a strange sight but no one invites a rock in the head!
Another destination addition to the "to do" list.
Ripley
Guys!, come on we do this type of nymphing all the time in the mountain streams, it is about the only way to catch wild browns, when the dry fly fishing is slow, and the water is clear , the browns lay in the tail out of the pool, and you can't let your fly line hit the water or they are gone. Can't be stealthy with a strike indicator , those are for beginners.
We are interested in coming again this year. please include us.
Les and Nan Austin
This can be used to imitate carp nuggets that come out of a carp feeder as well.

Besides, Steve and I will be out fishing on the Friday (AGAIN), to reap all the fish!!!
Remember last time? :D
All being told, Steve and I landed about 25 fish at the last GFF summit, on the Friday between 50 and 60cm. A couple attached.

Please, tell me where you hide the "cage" this year
… I have a small favor to ask.
Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.
The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
