Had to put my foot in boilin hot water and walk around on it to squeeze out the poison, That was the lifeguards advice...and it worked.

There is one problem with glass beads. They are breaking up in cold weather. Some years ago I was winterfishing and used Mysisshrimp fly made of white glass beads. Temperature was something like -3 to -5.

That's about average for what I'm catching, with the occassional 18-inch or so big bass to make things interesting. About the time that you start to feel guilty about how many 12-inch smallmouth you are catching, a nice one will tie you on. I've only landed one big slab of bass, the others have managed to elude me thus far. :roll:

I walked up to the pipeline above Riverbend Park yesterday. I spent about five hours making a huge clockwise circle starting at the lower rapids and ending up in the same spot. I caught about two dozen Smallmouths on poppers, muddlers, clousers, and my own Dad immitation in black. Saw lots of Smallmouth Bass in the still waters and caught most of mine in or just below moving water. Slow retrieve. Fast retrieve. No retrieve. Even with the air temp in the mid 90's the fish were active right through the afternoon. And those big strange Bluegills (What are they? Red-eared Sunfish or Warmouth? Never saw them in Massachusetts) fight like dogs and keep your attention when there are no bass on the line. But the bass are small. The biggest one I caught was about ten inches and the biggest one I saw was maybe two pounds. Are they averaging any bigger than that down at Turkey Run?

What a great way to spend a hot afternoon. Up to my waist in clear, flowing, relatively cool water catching fish.

Thank you for the information. As far as i have seen, the TFO has a very nice finish, I like the blue color.
On several other sites I have read very good comments about the TFO.
Hopefully this rod is not too stiff for my casting skills and style.
When i will be test casting this rod I will bring a clouser to cast with for sure.

And for Lino; I would try TFO rods for sure. I have a nine foot, four piece, 5 weight and it has power. I cast hair bugs and clousers with it with a decent amount of distance. I have tried out the 7 weight version of the same rod and it is one you should consider. Have you thought of going up to a 9 weight for bigger flies? Ther is no shame in it. Really. (My go to rod lately is one I stole. I got a brand new 9 foot, 9 weigth GLX Loomis for $50. It was bought by a local land developer that wanted to try and catch a Tarpon. He flew to Key West and fished for about three hours before he got frustrated and quit. The rod was used for about fifty casts.) I use this rod for bass, shad, pike, carp and all of my salt water fishing. I can cast my biggest flies 100 feet and it really is not a broom stick. Of course the price would be $600 under normal circumstances. I used a 9 weight TFO and was impressed. And the price was in your range.

Lino,

The HM2-series have been replaced by the HM3's, so that's why you find nothing on the site. I have an HM2 and it's an excellent rod. Check out whether you get classical snake eyes or modern one-foot eyes on the HM2's you have seen. The snake eyes are better in my opinion. The rod has been made with both.

And the TFO-rods are really great rods too. Like most other rod series there are some really sweet spot rods in the bunch, so make sure you test the exact model you intend to buy before letting go of your money.

I have recently purchased Scierra HM2 aftma 7 for saltwater flyfishing, a pretty fast rod compared to my previous one.
As I always suggest: go to the shop, inform the shop assistant on your budget, get the rods selected by price and then start "tasting" the rods one by one. You will easily find out which suits the best... It may be a halfday shoppping, however, bear in mind how much time our wives usually spend shopping for shoes or handbags :D :D :D

Might try use plastic q-tips for the tubes. To use those, just clip off the cotton ends. You can buy a box of those for around $3.00. I would add some rubber legs and a strike indicator to the back. So what you are really saying is that all these fancy bits are a waste of time? No jungle cock eyes, no seal fur and what no hackle?

I have a further suggestion regarding cleaning cork grips. Use a Scotchbrite (car) finishing pad instead of the sandpaper, not forgetting the liquid soap of course.
