Hello Guttormsen

I was in the south of France with my family two years ago and I spent a few days on the Verdon River and also on La Sourge in the Vauclause area.

The Verdon is an impressive river which runs through the largest Canyon in Europe. It is good for fly fishing although you must be very careful of the water levels which tend to rise suddenly due to water release from the Hydroelectric dam upstream. It is one of the most beautiful places in France and I saw some really large trout. The Verdon river runs into a beautiful dam which is full of Pike although I think you need a boat. I think you can purchase licences locally at fishing shops.

La Sourge is a beautiful chalk stream which originates at the Fontain de Vauclause. You should be quite close! The river is inhabited by beautiful brownies, tiger trout and grayling. It is excellent for sight fishing with a nymph and when the sun goes down the river boils with rising fish. During the day it is difficult to fish because of all the canoes and rafts but as soon as I said when the sun goes down the fun starts!

You can purchase a licence at the local fishing shop at Isle la Sourge. An excellent little shop. The owner is very friendly and he can help with flies and also fishing advice.

Hope this helps!

Tight lines!

Dear Kasper

It was a pleasure guiding you on the Tailwater. I really enjoyed your company and the same goes for Gianni. I'm sorry you didn't catch any grayling but as you saw they weren't very active and the ones that were, had been to "fly university" :D

I learned a lot from you and I will try using your nymphing technique next time I'm on a suitable river.

We will send you the cd with the photos asap. Please do the same with yours and we look forward to reading your report.

By the way on the way back from your Hotel, a young deer crossed the road in front of us!! A spendid sight!

Please do keep in touch!!

Best regards

Moreno

Nice fish! I've never caught a grayling before, amazing fish.. Nice pictures.

I hope you shut off your cell phone while you were fishing! Nothing worse than a lil' john ringtone while your trying to fish! :D

good fishing,

kirk o.

While were on the topic... What are your favorite brook trout flies?

Mine would have to be the "bucktail caddis" (I’m fairly certain that is what it is called) size 12 or 14, and size 10 wollybugger tied with peacock herl instead of black chenille. The small stream brook trout that I have fished don't seem to be particular about the fly (or how big it is) , just as long as it is buggy and presented correctly.(which can be difficult with tag alder on all sides!). One of the main reasons I like the fly is because it floats extremely well even after it has been demolished by dozens of small brookies.

I got the "bucktail caddis" pattern from this book, which I don't have on hand.. but I think I can remember the recipe.

Very well written and informative - makes me want to have a go at building my own and for a fishing buddy.

I would like to build a one-piece 5-6 foot stick for 2-3-4 weight lines for our small overgrown trout streams in the south of Western Australia. Would the same methods apply to single piece rods? What about purchased forms - can they cope with 5-6 foot single lengths or would you have to make purpose-built forms for this?

I can see potential problems (and costs) with our Customs agencies when trying to import bamboo into our country. Do you know of anyone who already imports bamboo into Australia from Demarest ?

Thanks again for sharing your considerable experience with us (for free!)

This method is now used succesfully in South Africa for catching yellowfish in streams.

Thank you for a super tool.
I've fished for Atlantic Salmon, brook trout, and shad for 16 years now, and have spent many hard earned dollars on leaders that were too short, too supple, too stiff, etc.
Now I am able to tailor my leaders to my personal casting requirements.
Thanks again for sharing.

man this is what i was looking for cause I have had my rod for a year.i have alot of intrest in fly fishing but no one around here does it.....thank you

Hi Martin, I saw this DVD a couple of weeks before and I absolutly agree with you. It seems to be not so difficult to catch any mullet according to this DVD but reality is different. The DVD is well made and I would recommend it. BTW a friend of mine caught a 62cm long mullet on Fyn a couple of days before:-)

Richard,
The costs run something like just under $500 U.S./day, but that is inclusive of - 3 meals and lodging, transportation to and from airport, guide, boats, laundry. The food is good, the drinking water is fine - I think it's well water. All food and drink is included. Flies, rods, waders, etc - i.e. personal stuff is not included, although if you break a rod (as I did) I think they've got a few they can lend you.

There didn't seem to be any kind of civil strife or concerns in the area, and the locals are extremely friendly and sincere.

I think the round trip airfare from most U.S. locations to Buenos Aires is around $1200 unless you get a deal. From there you fly out of the domestic airport to Bariloche, and I'm not sure what that round trip air fare is.

San Carlos de Bariloche is the nearest town of any size and it's kind of like Bend, Oregon, if you're familiar - a decent-sized outdoor tourest town with a mixture of Spanish/Latin and German/Swiss flavor. There are local artists both of native art and landscape type painters, but I was there to fish - so didn't spend much time looking. The landscape is stunning, and there are lots of trails (and they have very gentle horses if that's your thing). The lodge is not that high in elevation - something aroun 4,000 ft. above sea level - no altitude sickness or oxygen issues. The rivers range from slow-rolling to whitewater - if kayaking is your thing. The lodge is an hour and a half from Bariloche and it pretty much in the middle of nowhere as far as commercial places like galleries, stores, etc. The town of Lago Hess (where the lodge is located) is just a handful of farmhouses and ranches.

Feel free to contact them - it's their off season, so they might be on vacation, but they're good folks.

Joe K.

Dear Sir,
I love your web page but I noticed an error in your description of the "Surf Candy". This may go in the category of " who cares..." but it is an error nontheless. You state that the fly's origin date is 1997 and it is not. I own a framed (in shadow box and signed by Popovich on the card he gave me which is at the base of that mounted fly) "Surf Candy" tied by Popovich himself in front of me at the East Coast Fly Fishing Symposium held at Seven Springs Resort in Pennsylvania in April of 1992. In addition the fly is largely of the same construction and is essentially a color variation of a "Sea Candy" which made its published appearance in "American Angler and Fly Tyer" in 1990. This is not meant as an attack by any means on you or your web page - I enjoy your format and keep your web site as a reference for myself. I have been a fly tyer for the past 42 years and wish to say that you put out quality work. I just thought you might want to take note of the error.

Thanx Martin

Should have posted the recipe:

Hook: Mustad 94831 long shank dry, size 10 to 6 (size 8 shown above)
Tail: Elk cow body hair and 2 strand crystal flash each side
Body: Golden stone antron dubbing
body hackle: grizzle or brown
under-wing: 4 strands crystal flash
over-wing: elk cow body hair
head: bright orange sparkle dubbing
front hackle: grizzle or brown

I alter body and head colours also:

Body--------Head
Golden-------black
black-------orange
salmon pink for both
black-------golden

You mention using this fly for salt water fishing,ie.salt water trout. Do I take this to mean
spotted weakfish, or sea run trout such as the rainbow ect.?

Beatiful report!
I'm very interested to this spot; can you tell me something about the best period of the year?
Where were you located?
Can you suggest to me a B&B, lodge, ecc... near this wonderful sea?
Thank you and... I'm sorry for my English!

What are some typical costs to stay at the lodge ? What is included ? What is not ? What is the food and drinking water like ?
How stable is the government ? Is there any civil strive or terrorism in that area ?
Approx. cost of air fair from Harrisburg, Pa or Baltimore/ Washington, D.C. area ?
What are some other sites to see and things to do in the same locality ? (Historical and cultural things, especially, art.)
Thank you.

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
