I am glad to find so much pertanent information on the ever so important "leader". I had a formula years ago, when I was taught fly tying at a local high school, when I was 16. I am 32 now and have not fly fished in a couple of years. I built a 7.5' 4 wt. Powell a few years ago, and have not fished it yet. This is the year for me to get back in to the swing.

[quote:87f4efefed="Havtafish"]I was looking at the Canon A95. What do you think?[/quote:87f4efefed]

Havtafish,

The A95 is a great camera. I have always love the A series from Canon. But the most recent is called A650 and A670 as far as I know. The A670 is a sweet little camera with the flip-out display, 7 Mpixels and some really nice features. A better choice than the discontinued 5 Mpixel A95 in my eyes. And the housing ought to be about the same size (and price?).

As Ripley told you, you rather should take to Jylland instead. You're welcome to visit me in Holstebro. Except the garfish, you can catch the three other species 1,5 kilometers from my place in the same river and at nearly the same place in a river called Storå. For the garfish you have to drive 20 kilometers to Struer and the area around the Oddesund bridge.
If you are interested in a guide and a place to stay, just drop me a line.

Kind regards, Michael

O yes, this is right up my alley, count me in for this winning ticket.
Immigrants? I must be rated somewhere under this title somewhere in mid-section!

GFF conclave sounds an excellent idea and I am to interested in Martins special "dits" and "epic stories".

So as for time of year? Any suits me.
Fyn is a good option. Centrally located.

So, here's my ticket. Count me in Martin.

Phew...was it hot today or was it just me? Can't figure out which!

Ripley "of the yard".

I was looking at the Canon A95. What do you think? I agree with you(as in your article) that the flip out screen is good for taking high and low shots. I have also found a housing for it for a reasonable price

I would like to go with an UW housing so I can take UW shots or partial UW shots Martin. I just dropped my camera in the drink and its done. It just heats up now when I turn it on. That Grayling photo I posted is the cameras last  If I go with an UW housing Im safe all the way around. Is there a digital camera that you would reccomend for an overall good camera. I have found a website for UW housings here in the UK. Just punch in the make and model of camera and if theres a housing for it, it comes up. Ill be looking for one with a low depth rating ie 30 metres or so. I think Ill stay away from the full blown UW housings from the likes of ikelite. Any camera suggestions would be great. Throw a few at me and Ill do some research. Thanks

Option 3.

On the other hand I'm arranging a competition on the 20. of May. It is a schoolprojekt and you can read more about it her: http://www.oddesund-open.dk.
You can catch seatrout and garfish and win prices for about 7.000 DKr. And I'm quite sure, Martin has never fished in this area of Danmark before. There's a youth hostel and camping not far away.
Not that far away you can fish pike on the fly, if you are interested in that.
See more about the area on this [url=http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&saddr=copenhagen&daddr=berlin&t=k… map[/url]

Anybody interested? Depending on how many people are coming, 3 or 4 could live at our place. At the school I could ask for the facilties to watch "fishingmovies" or listen to Martins stories.

Otherwise: option 3.

See you soon, Michael

PS: Regarding the "different countries criteria": I'm one of this "førstegenerationsindvandrer" / immigrants, pølsetysker/"sausagegerman".

[quote:5f22c3d652="Havtafish"]Im looking to buy a digital camera with an underwater housing.[/quote:5f22c3d652]

Havtafish,

If you're not gonna dive, consider a waterproof camera such as the Pentax or Olympus models. They are a lot smaller and more convenient than a camera with a UW-housing.

[quote:da9ef67128="vanuz"]:D Finally it has been kicked off... GFF Partners, have you got anything to say? :D[/quote:da9ef67128]

Vanus, Guys,

Sure we have!

I will see what I can do regarding a GFF Clave here in Denmark. As far as I remember a clave has to have people from several countries and preferably some from far away (thousands of miles/kilometres), but we will be willing to let anybody in... even locals. Let's dub it the GFF Summit 2006.

Let us start with a small informal vote (I actually think this board has a voting system, but it's not activated)

Let's hear it for three alternatives. All go to the Danish coast somewhere - either Fun or Sjaelland I think. We can decide that later:

1) May - daytime fishing, garfish, sea trout. Probably the best fishing, but also shortest preparation time
2) June - morning and evening plus night. Some daytime fishing. Primarily sea trout. Time to prepare.
3) August/September - fishing possible 24h (almost), sea trout, mullet. More difficult fishing. Even more time to prepare.

I imagine a weekend-long gathering based in a place where we can camp and/or maybe rent a cabin. A fairly low-budget self-catering type of arrangement.

What say yer?

Martin

Fuzzycaddis,

I have a McKenzie vise light, which attaches rto the stem of the vise and has a flexible arm. It uses a standard 12V halogen lamp so you can choose what strength you want.

I love it!

I can't find a MacKenzie site, but there are lots of dealers who sell it.

Martin

That is indeed a nice fish.
I took one in February 2003 measuring a 82cm, at Stenderup Hage near to Kolding, which is my all time best. The good thing about it, I wasn't alone so the experience was a shared one! I needed the moral support to get it in - and on a class #5.
I have been told that it would be difficult to beat and I know it is a shot in a million billion (if thats a number).
And I say it to you Hans...Try, just try and beat that!!!
Remember...The memory will live on!

The largest one of my clients has taken is pictured below. Ron from the USA took 6 that day over 55cm! That was the largest. It was one of those days. Never repeated.

As for the illegal nets...I know.
I know Denmark does a great deal to stop it, but not enough. They will always be around as sure as death and taxes and so will pigs and the crap they produce and spray on the fields stinking up the country and polluting the waterways...But that's another story. One that is told now and then but no one gets to finish.

GREAT FISH HANS. Sorry I couldn't fish with you this time due to guiding. See ya soon eh?

"We'll make fly rods. Thousands of them. Twice as long as a man.
Some men are longer than others?
Yes, you heard the stories about me then"!

Dropped in on this page and find Bob has created some fine wet flies. In keeping with tradition he has made an impressive set to be shared with others on the internet.
Great work, Young fellow.

The latter of the above species you'll have to visit Jylland.
Unfortuantely no [i:079406b4c8]thymallus thymallus[/i:079406b4c8] exist near to Copenhagen or the surrounding area. But I guess you already knew that?
Did you already know that?
Of course you did...
Good hunting never-the-less and keep us posted.
[i:079406b4c8]O yeah[/i:079406b4c8] Martin...Awaiting the Bornholm article, pictures and latest skunked figures as if life depended on it.

Fly fishing for pike is starting to become very popular in the uk.We are getting a little bored with catching those stocked rainbows ! Pike have fascinated me since i was a little boy and i cant wait to get started ! Also , my eyesight is not very good, so tying up much bigger flies for pike will be much better for me.
Thank you very much for your most interesting article.

Best wishes
Stuart Duke

Soft hackles are probably the most effective flies there is. I have caught more difficult fish on soft hackled wet flies than any other . It is the most under rated flies in the world. You can fish them upstream dry fly with a bit of floatant and it looks like a seriously trapped crippled emerger/dry. Fish them as a unweighted nymph dead drift down stream. Czech nymph with them. Across and down on the surface as a egg laying caddis. Or sub-surface in the traditional North Country style, it will catch fish every way. There is no other fly that is this versatile.

Well you can count me in! It would be indeed a great happening and excellent platform to share experiences (for those you can share, of course :) .

Martin, thanks.Yes, it was perfect. Beautiful countryside, nice people, interesting architecture, wonderful fishing. The fish we saw in Go fishing in Odense was unbeliaveble. Silver fish in perfect condition. Last year I spent a week on west coast of Sweden and I would say, that chance to catch a big fish is bigger in Denmark. So I would like to come back again in September. See also attached file with one of our most successful fly

Pike,

It seems like you had an excellent trip to Denmark. I have been at Helnaes a couple of times and fished on Fun a dozen times. It's a really nice island with lots of good opportunities for sea trout fishing.

Glad you enjoyed your stay here.

Martin

Hanzie,

Some fish! Fish in that size are few and far apart. The kayak is indeed a great way to get around and gives you some new opportunities.

I used to own one, but I sold it because I used it too rarely. I found that the "gear load" and the preparations were a bit too much and that I had to go to certain places where I could easily haul it to the water. And fishing alone meant that I had to lift it off and onto the car by myself. Even though it was a fairly light kayak, I found that cumbersome. But I really enjoyed the trips I had in it.

But I never caught a fish like yours from it. That might have convinced me to keep it! ;-)

Martin

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
See more details about what you can do to help in this blog post.

The Global FlyFisher was updated to a new publishing system early March 2025, and there may still be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.
