Dutch Rudy van Duijnhoven is a well known freelance writer and photographer in the northern European fishing community delivering photos and articles to many European magazines and websites. Rudy is also very active in the fly fishing and fly tying scene and appears at shows as a fly-tyer and caster as well as a working journalist, documenting and reporting.

I asked Rudy our usual row of Fishy Photographer questions.

a) How did you start photographing - and what made you choose fishing related photos in particular?

My fishing career started around the age of twelve, I started fly-fishing around the age of eighteen. By than I had taken up photography already as well and it was logical for me to combine the two. When I started writing articles for the local fishing club magazine and not much later for national magazines, I soon realised that it would be easier to get articles published when I delivered some quality pictures with them as well. It was the time when pictures became more and more important in fishing magazines. A long term friend of mine wrote articles on coarse fishing for the same national fishing magazine and for this and for his work (among others he produced wholesale catalogues for several fishing firms) he was always looking for fishing pictures of different methods, species of fish, countries, well known anglers etc. Taking pictures of new products for fishing at trade shows evolved from this as well.

b) Do you have a particular subject, region or a style of pictures that you mainly shoot or are you more all-round?

Even though most of my pictures have to do with fly-fishing in one form or another, I have a large stock of pictures with objects around other methods of angling as well. When making recordings of foreign destinations, I always realise that I have to return home with good pictures more than with good stories. So often, before picking up the fly rod, I make sure to have enough pictures so I can produce an interesting article.

c) Where are your photos used? Books, magazines, brochures, ads, web sites, prints, gallery exhibits or other places?

My pictures are used in fishing catalogues, in brochures, advertisements, on websites, apps, in magazines like Fly Fishing & Fly Tying, Fliegenfischen, Fisch und Fliege, Rute und Rolle, Chasing Silver and Flyfishing in Saltwaters when that still existed. Paul Morgan's book ‘Saltwater Flyfishing' holds some pictures and articles of mine; I hope to publish a book of my own as well in the near future.

d) Is photography your main source of income - if at all a source of income - and do you do other jobs as a supplement?

Next to being a freelance photographer, I am an author and journalist too. I deliver columns on new products, events, shows etc. every month, next to that I make recordings of fishing competitions, foreign destinations, fishing shows and lots more. A lot of this is published in magazines like Beet/Rovers and Karper for which I am working as an editor also, but I have published numerous articles and pictures in other magazines in countries like Germany, the UK, Italy and the USA as well. A lot of my work is now also for the websites of Beet, Rovers and Karper.

e) Can people buy your pictures and if so, then in which form and where?

At this moment there is no website from which pictures are sold that holds a selection of my pictures. I know I have to look into this in the near future. When people are interested in certain pictures and we can find an agreement on the price of the picture, I can send them over by or a similar website.

f) Where do you currently live and work?

I was born and raised in Groesbeek, a village some ten kilometers south of Nijmegen in The Netherlands, and that is where I still live. I rent an apartment in a former nunnery, a building and chapel that was rebuild to hold 24 apartments in the early nineties of the last century. I have my own desk at the office of Beet as well but I work from my home and am on the road a lot too.

g) What's in your bag? Preferred cameras, bodies, lenses and other gear?

My Peli case plus waterproof backpack, which I usually have with me, holds a Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 7D both with battery grip, with 15 mm Fisheye, Canon EFS 10-22 mm, Canon EF 17-40 mm, Canon EF 24-105 mm, Canon EFS 60 mm, Canon EF 100 mm Macro, Canon EF 100-400 mm, Canon EFS 55-250 mm, Minolta Auto Meter VF, Speedlite 600EX-RT, Speedlite 430 EXII, Propac PB 820 battery pack and numerous filters, cards, cables, batteries.
When I go on the water with a belly boat, I either use a Canon 50D with Canon EFS 18-135 mm or a Canon G9 with underwater housing.

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
