The Global FlyFisher has recently been updated to a new publishing system, and there may be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.

RS2 Emerger

No comments yet

RS2 Emergers I believe were originally tied to match the hatch on trico hatches. They can be tied very small, down to size 30 even if you can find hooks that small (or want to even fish that small). So naturally, being so small, many people started using them for midge hatches as well. I personally used these often on the San Juan river in New Mexico where the fish eat midges all day long. The fish aren't shy to people, but are very picky with your fly size. Many times I would have to size down to a 26 or 28 just to entice a strike. I started tying these without tails with pretty good success. Another hatch that these worked very well for me on that river was BWO (blue wing olive) hatches. Like trico's, BWO's are in the mayfly family and are also very small, at least on that river. Most of the BWO's were in the 20-24 size range so this fly worked great to mimic them. I know of people tying these much larger as well, to fish larger mayfly and baetis hatches, but that is something I never did. I found this fly was right at home in the small sizes, and its relatively simplistic nature made tying these tiny flies much easier than say a Parachute Adams.

RS2's can float on the surface if you're really careful with presentation, especially if fished behind another dry fly that is more buoyant. However I find this shines as more an emerger, sitting right below the water film. Letting it sink slightly was never an issue, and in all honesty, would tend to get me more strikes than many dry flies sitting directly on the surface. When trout were rising for the emerging hatch, I guess maybe they would see these just under the surface easier than flies on top? Who knows the reason. But I tended to never add floatant to these, and just let them sink a little. The CDC wing and dubbing body would trap some air bubbles and keep it from sinking too quickly. Another great use for this fly was to actually sink it behind a heavy lead fly. I would fish this behind Perdigons regularly to get down to the bottom. The CDC wing would trap air, and keep it bouncing around above the river bed, reducing snags, and of course the perdigons, being tied on jig hooks would also not snag as easily.

Make sure you guys check out my sponsor risen fly, they manufactured the hooks I used in this video, but they also have amazing deals on rods, reels, riverside accessories, fly tying materials and tools like beads, hooks and scissors. All of these are top quality, but at amazing prices. On top of their amazing prices they are offering you all a discount just for being my subscriber! So go to www.risenfly.com and type in McFly at checkout for 15% off your first order with them.

Also dont forget to pick up one of my fly boxes. I have both magnetic backed and silicone backed, if these sell well I plan on getting more styles as well and maybe even bringing back the shirts that everyone loved years ago. Check out my amazon store front to pick up the boxes. - www.amazon.com/shops/McFlyAngler

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
