The Bling Midge

No comments yet

Bling midges are some of the most elegant yet easy-to-tie flies you'll come across. With their lifelike appearance, they mimic midge pupae or larvae perfectly. These flies are incredibly versatile, offering endless color combination possibilities, and they tie up quickly—making them one of the fastest flies to create once you’ve mastered the body. In fact, you can fill an entire fly box with 100+ of these little guys in an afternoon!

In this video, I’m tying them on a dry fly hook to keep them small and light. The thin wire of the dry fly hook helps achieve the slim profile of the body, but you can definitely tie them on a nymph hook as well. These tiny flies can be tied as small as size 28 (maybe even 30!) but can also be scaled up to size 16 or 14 with thicker thread (like 240 denier) for a larger body.

These midges work great as dropper flies behind a weighted nymph. Since they’re unweighted, they bounce naturally in the current, attracting fish while being easily dropped to where the fish are by a heavier lead fly. Whether you're euro nymphing or fishing under an indicator, these midges will get the job done!

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
