Bead Head Pheasant Tail

Pheasant Tails are quite possibly the most popular general purpose nymph. I dont think Ive ever gone to a fly shop and not seen a selection of pheasant tails in many sizes. Both in bead head versions and non weighted. To be a general purpose nymph, I feel it has to be able to either mimic many different types of bugs, or just seem to work wherever you take it. And the Pheasant tail fits that bill perfectly. It mimics a mayfly nymph really well, but also can be a stonefly nymph when tied a bit larger, or even a midge pupa if you tie it very very small. Pheasant tail feathers come died in a number of different colors, and therefor, these can be tied in many colors as well. Add a bit of flash over the wing case and you can get a flash back pheasant tail, something that can be more of an attractor than the non flash version.

I like to fish the bead head version like I tied today as a lead nymph. So I add a bit more weight with that lead wire. This gets your rig down quickly, and allows you to fish a non weighted nymph behind it which will bounce around with the current.
