The flies for steelhead fishing often differs from, for example, the Atlantic salmon fly fishing where the materials of the flies are very traditional. The many east-facing rivers in the USA have created a new type of flies which in materials and colors experiments far beyond, what we are used to with the Scandinavian flies for salmon and sea trout. Steelheads are known for preferring stronger colors such as pink, purple, chartreuse or blue. A good example is the fly type Squidro, which was originally created by the legendary steelhead guide Scott Howell. It is an intruder-style fly with long rubber legs, few materials and weighted eyes for getting the fly down in the strong currents of the rivers. We have had the Swedish fly fisher and flytier Marcus Hermansson Thorvald from Hökensås Sportfiske in the studio, where he ties his favorite Squidro-version to his own fishing for rainbows in the local river Baltak.
