A sedge pattern in the Goddard tradition - with a twist. This fly is a combination of the G+H Sedge and a hackling method adapted from Dutch Piet Weeda - making it a one-material-fly.

The Real Deerhair sedge has both deer hair wing and hackle

Transsection of the Real Deerhair.
The hair hackle has also been slightly trimmed on the underside.

Hook | Standard dry fly, size 12 |
Thread | Moser's Power Silk or similar strong thread |
Wing/body | Spun and trimmed deer hair |
Hackle | Deer hair tips spun in loop |
Head | Tying thread |
Antennae | Deer hair tips |
- Spin deer hair in the traditional manner 2/3 of the shank length
- Trim to the desired shape. I use a razor blade and strive for a triagular shape
- Grip the tips of deer hair in a metal clip (Bulldog clip or similar) and cut to desired length directly from the hide
- Form a loop of tying thread and put the deer hair so that only one or two millimeters are left on the butt side of the loop
- Twist the loop and you get a bottle brush which you ca wind around the shank while holding back the tips after each turn
- Whip finish, and that's it
- Antennae are not necessary, but they do look nice
- You can also trim the underside of the hackle for a lower floating fly
