Video review: A Year in the Life
Jonathan Tomlinson's video "A Year in the Life" is an hour of mesmerizing fish porn. Or should I call it fish erotica? That sounds a bit more sophisticated
It's been a while since I watched some proper "fish porn". Most of the videos I see nowadays are the YouTube style: short, often instructional – like fly tying – many made by amateurs, most good, but not mesmerizing.
Jonathan Tomlinson's video "A Year in the Life" is an hour of mesmerizing fish porn. Or should I call it fish erotica? That sounds a bit more sophisticated, which is what it is. It does contain these strongly stimulating scenes of casts, hookups, fights and landings of big and attractive fish, but also allows for a bit of practical and philosophical talk from the people fishing and even leaves room for the appreciation of the small and beautiful fish caught in a pristine stream.
But porn... eh, erotica it is!
But porn... eh, erotica it is!
Just look at the list of locations and species.
The saga island Iceland fished by Paul Procter, world traveler as he calls himself, fishing for brown trout in Minnivallalækur and Big Laxá.
Tropical paradise Kiribati fished by Mark Windsor for Bonefish, GT's, triggerfish. 13 species in one morning as it’s told.
Trout stream heaven New Zealand, south island, again Paul Procter fishing and again for brown trout.
Caribbean saltwater in Ascension Bay fished by Duff Battye for bonefish and permit.
And the classic UK chalk streams fished by Charles Jardine and Gilly Bate for grayling.
All locations beautifully portrayed and filmed, and all anglers telling vividly about the experience and showing how it’s done.
Filmed, as the title indicates, during the period of a year by UK angler Jonathan Tomlinson. A lot of hours have been spent on the water, a lot have been spent filming and editing and quite a bit of traveling has been done to get this video done. Tomlinson knows what he is doing as he has proved before in his previous productions in the Smokin Drag Productions name. The video Uncharted Waters from Bassas da India, which I have on DVD and reviewed in 2012 - and really liked.
The beautiful thing about this video is that you don't need to order any DVD and wait by the mailbox. If you shell 8 US$ you can be watching it in 5 minutes. It's available online on demand on Vimeo.com in full HD. One hour of great fishing and beautiful video for 8 dollars. That's Global Class right there!

Long story short
Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.
Long story longer
The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
