Video review: Green Tide
If you thought NZ was only trout in streams, you'd better think again! This trailblazing DVD shows some fantastic saltwater fishing around the famed islands. Snapper, kahawai, kingfish and many more weird and wonderful species.
We are used to seeing New Zealand in connection with fly fishing. The North and South Islands renowned fishing for trout is so well covered in video and text that it's almost tiresome... if it wasn't for the fact that it is attractive as well as extremely suitable for pictures and video.
But it's still a great diversion to see a completely different side of these beautiful islands, namely the saltwater fishing! And yes, NZ does have some world class saltwater, which might not match the stream fishing, but judging from this DVD comes very close.
The DVD is a collection of different examples of the excitement that can be found in the ocean around New Zealand, and targeting species such as snapper, kahawai and kingfish in sequences that show coastal as well as boat fishing.
If you can't be excited by the sequence where the crew fishes for humongous kingfish in the current beneath a large buoy and the photographer sits above the whole scene and both films and guides the angler, well, then you are pretty hard to excite! Other scenes might not drive you quite as close to the edge of the seat as this, but certainly shows a lot of very attractive and productive--and partly unknown--fishing.
The DVD is not a how-to or where-to as such, but acts more as an appetizer showing another side of New Zealand. There are plenty tips to exciting fishing and even a few practical pointers to where and how to go about it. But the sheer joy of the fishing is enough to warrant the invest in the DVD, which is prized at 40 NZ$, which amounts to about 25 US$. Overseas customers (overseas to NZ, that is) can deduct the tax, but have to add postage depending on your location.
But no matter the price, I have enjoyed this DVD several times already, and shown it to fishing friends who have all agreed that this is a very good DVD and a nice variation in the constant stream of stream fishing DVD's from New Zealand.

Long story longer
The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
