If you are fishing a tiny mountain stream, you cannot use a huge Thingamabobber to hold up a tiny nymph with a 2 millimeter bead. When that Thingamabobber lands, it will spook all the fish for the next 20 meters.
The same principle applies to fishing a big river, you cannot use a bit of grease on the leader to hold up a heavy 4 millimeter tungsten bead that is cast out at the end of half a fly line.
Choose your indicator according to the size of the river and the size and weight of the fly you will be fishing.
Various strike indicators have developed and evolved to fit and fish different types and sizes of rivers.
Examples are: Greased leaders, floating putty, Yarn indicators, Thingamabobbers, tiny moulded floating foam blobs etc. And remember keep on applying grease of float ant to make the indicator easier to see and read.
Don't be afraid to move the indicator so that the fly can drift deeper or shallower. Sometimes a fish will be holding a little deeper, and the difference is a take or no take.
PS: A dry fly is a very good strike indicator.
