Bass Popper Fly

Popper flies are a staple for all bass fisherman. Having at least a few popper flies in your box is a good idea every time you go fishing for bass. There is no better feeling than having a bass thrash the surface after a popper, and the blow ups can be epic. Ive seen bass completely clear the water surface after a popper, and it makes for some of the most exciting and fun hookups in all of fishing. Poppers disturb the surface quite a bit, attracting bass to this commotion. They spit a lot of water, and make a popping sound when stripped just right. Anyone who fishes bass regularly know they like to go after pray that cause a lot of commotion.

Bass eat a wide variety of prey. Basically anything that fit in their mouths (which they have some large mouths) is fair game to eat for them. Ive seen them down baby ducklings, lizards, snakes, frogs and of course other fish. They will even eat other bass. This being said, you can tailor your bass poppers to whatever forage they are actively seeking out at the time. If there are lots of small shad in the water, then make the tails longer and thinner, and of course color them accordingly. Today I tied some poppers with a frog shape to them. I split two feathers in the back to look like legs kicking, and got some sili legs sticking out mid way on the hook to look like their little arms. So you can make your poppers with whatever style tail you feel will work best for your area and style fishing.

The colors of AD markers I used today are as follows: chartreuse, lemon yellow, celery, cadmium orange, and Mocha. I also used a green sharpie. For the red head one, I used a black sharpie and crimson AD marker. For the fire tiger color, I used all the same colors as the frog one without the celery, but added black stripes with a black sharpie.
