Harpeth River Tennessee in Winter

The area where I fished the Harpeth River is in Franklin Tennessee just south of Nashville. My parents live close to that area and I was out visiting them for Christmas. So I decided to bring my fly rod and go try some local fishing. A subscriber of mine lives near the area. His name is Brandon and he recommended this spot. Unfortunately the Cumberland river was blown out according to the local bass pro shop there, so I couldn't get out to fish some trout which I hear is pretty good at that river. But I was told there are smallmouth bass in the Harpeth which do occasionally bite in the winter. However we had just had a major winter storm come through that area a few days before I arrived and the temps were still very low. I heard it was the coldest temps in years, so I suspect my lack of catching had to do with that, and not the fault of the river. Possibly it could also have been my lack of knowledge of the area as well.

My lovely wife and beautiful kids were still back at my parents when I went fishing just 2 days after Christmas. I did not want to leave them there without me too long, although it was good timing since they were occupied with their new toys. However I only got to fish for a couple of hours, and tried two spots. I do suspect it will be an amazing fishing river if I can ever get out there in the spring or summer time. The river was beautiful and the water looked very fishy.

If any of you have fished that river with any success, please let me know what you recommend technique wise in that area. I will do my best to try and make it back this coming summer and hope to hook a few of the local Tennessee bass I keep hearing great things about.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
