Olive and Partridge Soft Hackle

The Olive & Partridge is a simple #softhackle fly pattern and simple to tie. There are quite a number of soft hackle #flypatterns that have been standards in fly boxes for many years like the Partridge & Orange or this Black & Blea. I hold the Olive and Partridge in the same class of flies.

I've kept this simple by using just a thread body, but an additional floss or stretch flex could be tied in as the body material. Keep in mind that the thread (or floss) will darken when wet.

Olive & Partridge Soft Hackle Fly Pattern

Hook: Firehole 315 nymph hook*
Thread: Olive 8/0 (70d)
Ribbing: Small gold wire
Body: Olive 8/0 (70d) or floss
Thorax: Gold Hare’s Ear Plus (HET9)
Hackle: Hungarian partridge

*I used this hook because I like the straight eye for my soft hackle flies and I have a preference for curved shank hooks. You can use dry fly hooks if you want the fly to sit high in the surface film or heavier hooks to get the fly to sink.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
